Title: Grown-Up
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Rating: G
Word Count: 207
Summary: Dawn liked the change in her Mom at first. Takes place during Band Candy.

Mom was being super-weird.

At first, it had been kinda fun. She’d seemed to want to talk to Dawn and let her play her music super-loud without making any fuss. She was being all nice to Buffy too, which was nice really cause Dawn was tired of all the stupid fighting about Buffy’s Slayerness. Her sister was a superhero, she wished people would try and see the upside of that - and besides, it was kind of annoying, watching Mom fuss over here all the time.

Only this wasn’t much better.

“Dawnie, I’m going out, okay!”

“But … I haven’t got a babysitter … ”

Mom always insisted on a babysitter, even more now that they knew about Sunnydale and normally it was super-lame but … right now, it seemed weird that there wasn’t one.

“Oh, you’ll be fine darling. I know I make too much of a fuss! I’ll see you later!”

Dawn managed a weak smile as her mother dashed out of the door. It was odd but suddenly, she liked the fuss that Mom made. She didn’t think she liked the fact that it was gone at all.

Maybe she wasn’t quite as grown up as she’d thought.

She hoped Buffy would be home soon.

Title: Knowing
Fandom: Merlin
Rating: G
Word Count: 56
Summary: Merlin knows what Mordred is

Everybody else in Camelot likes Mordred.

The others talk about him with affection. They talk about his smile, his friendliness, his willingness to help.

Merlin doesn’t care how often Mordred smiles. He doesn’t care if Mordred is “friendly” or if he wants to help other people.

He knows what Mordred is.

No smile can hide that.

Title: Shy
Fandom: Detective Academy Q
Rating: G
Word Count: 132
Summary: Kyuu has feelings about Ryu's smile.

Kyuu had never seen a smile as strange and hesitant as Ryu’s proper smile.

His fake smile was fine. The cold, calculating one he produced when he was feeling triumphant or faintly trying to disturb someone, he had that down to. But his real smile, the smile that most people would produce automatically, that one was strange and rare and it seemed like Ryu had almost never produced it. Kyuu sometimes wanted to coax it, like it was a rare, shy little animal.

He didn’t though. Ryu wouldn’t have liked it. And the others would have laughed if he’d tried to explain it. But Kyuu hoping that he’d see more of that smile of Ryu’s. And that one day, Ryu would be totally comfortable with it.

He wanted Ryu to be happy.

Title: Unfaked
Fandom: Hannibal
Rating: G
Word Count: 100
Summary: Will likes dogs.

One of the things Will had always liked about dogs was that their smiles were always perfectly real.

Humans were regularly frustrating when it came to smiles. There were obviously fake smiles. Or smiles that were more like smirks when they were laughing at you. Or smiles that seemed totally real and yet, when you thought about them later, you realised they weren’t real at all.

Dogs never did that to you. Throughout everything, dogs were always the same. Their wide smiles were always real. They didn’t judge. They understood.

When dogs were smiling, it was easy to smile back.

Title: Working up a Lather
Fandom: Fringe
Rating: PG
Word Count: 346
Summary: Walter wakes Peter in the middle of the night.

Peter woke up because Walter was talking to himself.

He supposed that he would eventually get used to this but currently, it was new and annoying every single time. He rolled over, intending to ignore it but the words suddenly hit him and he realised that Walter was distressed about something rather than just the usual rambling.

“Walter? You okay?”

“No, I am not okay, this is all very wrong, there is no soap, how is a man supposed to live?!”

Since Peter had only recently take Walter from a mental institute where the man had clearly not shaved for years, he couldn’t quite understand why Walter was throwing such a fit but he got out of bed anyway.

“There’s soap, Walter. We have plenty of soap. Have you looked in the bathroom?”

“That soap is not real soap, it is wrong you can’t work up a lather and I won’t have it!”

Peter investigated the bathroom. There didn’t seem to be anything wrong with the soap but a quick search found some more and he handed it into the still grumbling Walter’s hand.

“Here. Try this instead.”

He didn’t think he was hiding any of his annoyance but to his surprise, Walter’s eyes filled with tears.

“You … found me soap.”

“Well, sure, Walter,” Peter said, feeling uncomfortable. “Hey, I want to go back to sleep, if finding soap will help with that, well, here’s the soap.”

Walter smiled at him. It was a shy, timid smile and Peter wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. This relationship between them was so fragile and weird. He couldn’t decide if this was even what he wanted. And seeing his father being so ... shy was utterly disconcerting. He was used to a very different Walter.

“Go and wash, Walter,” he said.

“Yes,” Walter said. “I always think it’s very important to get a lather up when one is washing.”

Peter considered if he should ask why Walter was washing in the middle of the night but decided against it.

Some things were better not known.

Title: Weapons
Fandom: Firefly
Rating: PG
Word Count: 243
Summary: Mal has a talk with River.

Mal didn’t mean to draw his gun when he heard the odd sound in the hold but well, he was a suspicious guy, even on his own boat and it was an odd noise …

Then it squeaked and he realised it was actually River.

“What are you doing down there?”

She peered at him doubtfully, her eyes fixed on his gun. Mal quickly put it away, then shrugged at her.

“You make a man jump, you gotta expect to see his weapon.”

She smiled at him, a funny little smile, her head slightly on one side.

“Weapons are made to hurt. Shoot, stab, slice, cut, kill. Blood like flowers all over the floor, like sequins on a dress. But they don’t mean to. They just do what they’re made for.”

“Right,” Mal said. “Whatever you say. Where’s that brother of yours?”

Simon appeared, apparently summoned up by the thought. He gave Mal a brief apologetic look as he headed straight down to River’s side.

“River, mei-mei, what are you doing down here? You shouldn’t wander off like that. You haven’t been playing with anything you shouldn’t, have you?”

“I don’t play,” River said, sounding so all grown-up and indignant-like that Mal had to stop himself from sniggering. Simon rolled his eyes and started to lead her back to where she was supposed to be and Mal got on with what he was doing, putting the whole more than slightly weird conversation aside.

Title: Frowning Upside Down
Fandom: Sapphire and Steel
Rating: G
Word Count: 100
Summary: Steel doesn't understand smiling.

Steel was sure that his smile was perfectly servicable.

Smiles were easy. You just had to twitch your lips upwards. How could anybody possibly get that wrong?

“Smiles are supposed to convey emotion,” Sapphire said gently. “The problem is that you are not actually conveying that emotion. You’re just frowning upside down.”

Steel scowled. Humans were so odd, the way they insisted on putting emotions onto things. If they had to have so many of them, why couldn’t they just have them, instead of behaving strangely when you didn’t have them?

Sapphire seemed to find this funny when he complained.

Title: Following
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: G
Word Count: 195
Summary: Jamie isn't sure about this strange man that has just arrived ...

Jamie wasn’t sure why there was a strange man smiling at him.

He was a very strange man too. The clothes were all wrong - rather like the clothes that the strange Doctor had worn actually. Jamie hadn’t thought about the Doctor, Ben and Polly for a while. He sometimes wished he’d stayed with them …

He smiled doubtfully back at the grinning man.

“James Robert McCrimmon!” the man said and Jamie relaxed slightly because the man’s accent was Scottish. Then he tensed up because the man knew his full name and they had not been introduced yet.

“How’d ye know me?”

“Long story, too much to tell now!” the man said. “Short version, need you to come and help me now, only person I can rely on. Nice to hear a proper voice for once, let me tell you. Remember the TARDIS? Well, only a bit but we’ll sort that out too, come on, why are you standing there looking all blank?”

“Och, maybe because I don’t know who ye are?”

“I’m the Doctor! Obviously! Only Scottish now. And taller. Now come on!”

Jamie supposed the man was probably completely mad.

He followed anyway.

Title: Big-Mouth
Fandom: Jonathan Creek
Rating: G
Word Count: 172
Summary: Jonathan has a worried smile ...

Jonathan was giving her the smile.

He always had that smile when he was feeling nervous. It somehow made him look even more like a puppy than he usually did. He regularly produced it when Maddy was around and she couldn’t help rolling her eyes at him and the smile instantly turned into a slightly more grumpy expression.

That was more like him.

“Well, where is she then?” she asked. “This lady friend you wanted me to meet and gave me all these detailed instructions about what I was and wasn’t to talk about? Honestly Jonathan, are you starting your relationship with lies? I would never have thought it of you …”

“I am not!” Jonathan said indignantly. “I have told Polly everything about my past including you. It’s just that you’re a big mouth who never knows when to shut up about things so I thought a few suggestions of things not to say might be sensible.”

“Jonathan,” Maddy said reassuringly. “When have I ever said the wrong thing?”

Jonathan groaned.

Title: Friends
Fandom: Blake's 7
Rating: PG
Word Count: 296
Summary: Vila wasn't sure about Gan at first...

Vila was a little scared of Gan at first.

Gan was a big guy and big guys in prison were often … scary. Vila had met far too many of them and was far too used to them. Used to blows and violence and random cruelty.

Only Gan wasn’t like that. When he first saw Vila do a magic trick, he smiled, a big proper smile and asked if Vila could do any more. When Vila did another trick - always keep your audience happy if they’re possibly psychopathic killers - Gan laughed. It sounded a proper laugh but Vila wasn’t stupid. Sometimes they did pretend …

Only Gan’s nice smile didn’t falter until one of the other men tried to get at Vila. Then his smile turned scary.

“You’ll leave him alone,” he said, quite simply, putting a hand on Vila’s shoulder. “Or else.”

Vila expected things to get a bit more unpleasant after that. There were a lot of things that Gan might want and they might not be nice.

But Gan wasn’t like that. He got quite upset when Vila sort of hinted that he might be.

“I want us to be friends, Vila. Friends don’t … hurt each other. I thought you wanted to be friends too.”

“I don’t think you get prison, Gan, mate.”

“Good,” Gan said firmly. “I don’t want to either. Let’s just be friends, Vila. I’ll look after you and you can make me laugh, deal?”

Vila had heard offers like that before. They weren’t usually truthful ones. But there was something about Gan … something that made him smile nervously back and shrug.

“If you say so. Hey, did you ever hear the one about the trooper, the computer expert and the politician that went into a bar …?”
