Title: Discovery
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Rating: G
Word Count: 219
Summary: Dawn has been keeping an eye on Buffy ...

Dawn just wanted to know what was going on.

Mom seemed to be in denial but Dawn knew. She could see that Buffy was doing all the same things that she’d done back in LA. Sneaking out, missing school … and Dawn knew other stuff too, like that Buffy had been sneaking in the boyfriend that Mom didn’t know about.

She tried talking to Buffy about it but Buffy wouldn’t tell her anything, except that if Dawn told anybody about Angel (the boyfriend), Buffy would make Dawn’s life miserable for ever and ever. Mom wouldn’t approve because he was too old and that was the only reason Buffy was sneaking him around.

Dawn wasn’t so sure. She wondered if the boyfriend was a gang member or something. He didn’t look like a gang member when she saw him out the window - he was kind of cute, in an old sort of way but nowhere near as cute as Xander. But Buffy obviously liked him, even if Dawn didn’t totally know why.

Maybe Buffy liking him meant she was doing stuff she shouldn’t be doing.

So Dawn kept an eye on things. She listened when she maybe shouldn’t have listened. Watched when she maybe shouldn’t have watched.

And found out things that maybe, she hadn’t actually wanted to find out.

Title: Following in his Footsteps
Fandom: Detective Academy Q
Rating: G
Word Count: 132
Summary: Kyuu's mother is quite used to dragging him away from things.

She was very, very used to having to drag her son away from things that didn’t concern him. The conversations afterwards almost always went along the same lines.

“Kyuu, you mustn’t be nosy!”

“I’m not being nosy, Mum! I’m being a detective!”

“Kyuu, you are seven. At this point in your life, there’s absolutely no difference between being nosy and being a detective.”

He always pouted when she told him that. As though he didn’t really understand what she was saying, even though he knew he had to do what she said. He was just desperate to be a detective. Desperate - although he didn’t know it - to follow his father’s footsteps.

It scared her. It scared her so much.

But she already knew that there was nothing she could do about it.

Title: Vicarious
Fandom: Death Note
Rating: PG
Word Count: 197
Summary: Matsuda knows it's wrong to listen

Matsuda knew it was wrong to enjoy listening.

He wasn’t stupid. He knew full well that you oughtn’t like listening to your sort-of-boss have an affair with someone who was working for the guy you were trying to catch. He was supposed to be all professional like Ide and Aizawa. Concentrate on what was happening and not enjoy it or see it as fun. And he did try that, he tried that all the time but … it was difficult, somehow.

Life usually wasn’t very exciting. In fact, Matsuda thought it was quite often a disappointment, particularly if you enjoyed dramas. None of those things ever seem to actually happen. Particularly not if you were someone like Matsuda.

Whereas Raito, well … stuff happens to Raito. It’s hardly surprising because Raito is handsome and clever and charming and all these things that Matsuda isn’t. Of course stuff happens to him and girls want him and his life is dramatic. It’s just … different for him.

Different and interesting.

A glimpse of a life Matsuda knew he would never have.

So yes, he knew it was wrong. But that wasn’t enough to actually stop him, all the same.

Title: Finding the Doctor
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: G
Word Count: 201
Summary: Barbara collects sightings of the Doctor

“I’ve found him again.”

Ian looked up and saw Barbara’s grin. She held out the book towards him.

“They don’t call him anything here but I can’t imagine any other “mysterious man” that might arrive in a “mystical hum” and save the people.”

“Now, now, we humans have done a lot of saving ourselves you know,” Ian teased her, although he knew she was right. After a while, you learned to spot those odd moments where the Doctor had appeared in history and had acted. Sometimes, it was obvious because it wasn’t officially acknowledge; strange events that some people dismissed as conspiracy theories but others knew differently. Sometimes, you just … knew.

Barbara was collecting all of them. As she said, she was a historian and some things deserved to be recorded properly. She’d even tracked down people who had been connected to the events. A lot of them had talked to her which didn’t surprise Ian. Barbara was brilliant at that just on her own - but also, there was something that told you sometimes that someone knew what you knew. You could see it in their eyes somehow.

You knew when someone else had experienced the strangeness of the Doctor.

Title: Consequences
Fandom: Jonathan Creek
Rating: G
Word Count: 251
Summary: Sometimes you just need to know what to say to Jonathan to get results

“This is all your fault,” Jonathan announced.

“How is it my fault?!” Maddy snarled, struggling with the ropes that were tied around her wrists.

“You never know when to keep your nose out of something, do you? I knew one day you’d go to far! It’s always “Oh, let’s just look in this house Jonathan, I’m sure it won’t result in your horrible death!” Well, look at us now, you tied up to a pole and me handcuffed to this door and both of us awaiting what’s likely to be a fate worse than death!”

“Well, you’re the magician! Can’t you just … shrug them off or something?”

“Shrug them off? They’re proper metal handcuffs, not furry things you get out of your dodgy magazines!”

Maddy gave a haughty sniff and went back to trying to sort out her ropes. She’d read a lot about how to get yourself untied but it was proving very slightly more difficult than it had in everything she’d ever read. It was, in fact, just possible that she was, well … stuck. And she could hear footsteps from upstairs.

“If we die horribly, I’ll never forgive you!” Jonathan announced furiously.

“Well, obviously,” Maddy couldn’t help pointing out. “You’d be dead.”

The irritation Jonathan obviously felt at this comment apparently gave him the strength to finally get himself free of the handcuffs. Maddy couldn’t help feeling just a little bit smug.

It was always a matter of knowing just what to say to Jonathan after all.

Title: A Little Trouble
Fandom: Sarah Jane Adventures
Rating: G
Word Count: 274
Summary: Sarah Jane has always been nosy

Sarah Jane has always been nosy.

She’s not ashamed of it. Why should she be? That’s her job, after all. To ask the questions people don’t necessarily want asking and then to write them down. There’s nothing wrong with healthy curiosity, with wanting to know about the world around you and sharing that information with others who also want (or need) the answers.

Of course, it has, just occasionally, led her into a little trouble.

Maybe more than a little trouble.

And then it led her to the Doctor. And trouble doesn’t even describe what happened while she was with the Doctor.

Trouble and a thousand new questions.

Seeing the universe was so incredible. So many things that she’d never come across, never dreamed of. Not just other planets and alien races but strange things, beautiful things. Weeping trees - and why did they weep? She didn’t know. Oceans that were made of ashes - how did that work? They moved like water but they were ashes, it was just clear. Flowers that walked - but were they really still flowers if they walked? Didn’t that make them animals?

Sometimes the Doctor answered her questions. Sometimes he was too busy. And sometimes he just looked at her and smiled and told her to work it out for herself.

Once she was back on Earth, it was a little harder to find those answers. But Sarah Jane was determined to never give up. There were always new answers to find. Always new questions to ask, no matter how old you were.

And Sarah Jane was looking forward to finding more answers with her new friends by her side.
