Title: The Road To Hell
Fandom: Firefly
Rating: PG
Word Count: 262
Summary: River asks Simon for help. He did his best.

Simon was half-asleep when River came into his room.

“Simon?”

He made a noise like he was totally asleep, not really up for a conversation. River snorted at him and sat on the end of the bed. Simon never could fool her. With a small sigh, he sat up and looked at her.

“What’s wrong, River?”

She drew her knees up, hugging them to her chest for a long moment, gnawing on her lip. Simon waited, knowing that she would blurt it out anyway. She wouldn’t have come into his room if there wasn’t something she wanted.

“I had a bad dream,” River said suddenly. “I was at the academy and I was sitting at a desk and it was made of bones and everywhere was dripping with blood.”

She shivered and Simon reached out to comfort her, stroking her arm.

“Should I go?” River asked him, her eyes shining in the darkness. “Maybe it was a warning, maybe it was … was a thing.”

“No, silly,” Simon told her firmly. “It was a nightmare because you’re nervous, that’s all. It’s not a warning. Just nerves.”

“I don’t get nervous,” River said, sounding sulky. She crawled up beside Simon and lay down next to him. Simon let her. He was quite used to letting River snuggle down with him sometimes. She slept badly on occasion, probably because her brain found it hard to unwind.

“It’ll be fine,” he said reassuringly. “You’ll have the best time of your life, River. I promise.”

They were words he never forgot. And words he long regretted.

Title: Good Idea at the Time
Fandom: Merlin
Rating: G
Word Count: 100
Summary: It always seemed a good idea at the time.

It always seemed a good idea at the time.

That was the thing that hurt the most, in a way. Whenever Merlin looked back, he could see every little lie building up into every great inescapable lie. And he could see which of those lies had hurt and ruined and destroyed and some of them, some of them he would almost kill to go back and change because he could see it would have been better, better to have told the truth or explained or just done it differently.

But they had always seemed a good idea at the time.

Title: Mellow
Fandom: Black Books
Rating: G
Word Count: 150
Summary: Manny really ought to have thought this through.

“It seemed like a good idea at the time!” Manny wailed.

Fran gave him a withering look.

“It seemed like a good idea to give Bernard free access to some extremely strong home-brewed hooch?”

“Well … well, he asked nicely!” Manny said, peering out of the cupboard they were crouching in. Bernard hadn’t found them yet but it was only a matter of time. “I thought he’d enjoy it! I thought it would make him feel mellow!”

“He is not mellow,” Fran growled, taking a look herself. Bernard was emptying ice cubes everywhere, his expression manic.

“It shall be an ice skating rink and a book shop! We shall be rich, rich! Innovator, that’s what they shall call me! Innovator! MANNY, WHERE ARE YOU? WE SHALL SKATE AND I SHALL BE BEAUTIFUL!”

Manny cowered at the back of the cupboard, whimpering. Fran decided not to reveal their presence just yet.

Title: Flow of Power
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Rating: G
Word Count: 100
Summary: Tara loves watching her Willow.

Tara loved watching Willow do spells.

It was something about the look in her eyes. Sometimes completely focused, sometimes heavy-eyed and dreamy. The way her hands moved, brushing over the ingredients, her long fingers flickering over things. The different coloured charms tangling over her pale skin, the power flowing around her. Even when she was doing something small and simple, it was amazing to watch her. It made Tara feel connected to something else, something wonderful and strange that she’d never quite been able to tap into herself, even with everything that her mother had taught her.

It was beautiful.

Title: Moping
Fandom: Getbackers
Rating: PG
Word Count: 176
Summary: Ginji is moping. Ban hates it.

Ginji was moping again.

Ban was beginning to get used to recognising the signs. Mostly, the Lightning Bug didn’t mope but when he did, if you didn’t nip it swiftly in the bud, it became a deep irritation that just wasn’t worth putting up with.

“What are you thinking about, moron?” he asked, shoving his fist down on the top of Ginji’s head and rubbing his knuckles hard into his scalp. “Stop it right now, you know you should leave the thinking to me. I’m the brains of this outfit, you’re the dope, remember?”

Ginji wailed, flailing under Ban’s knuckles. Ban gave one last rub for good measure, then let him go. Ginji stared at him with those annoying wobbly eyes of his and Ban glared back.

“Always thinking and moping,” he said crossly. “Honestly. You don’t have to worry, you know. The S in Getbackers means you’re never alone.”

Ginji’s face lit up in a smile which Ban pretended that he wasn’t at all interested in. It was better than the moping face after all.

Title: Protection
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: G
Word Count: 107
Summary: The Doctor plans to protect everybody.

The Doctor’s eyes narrowed as he surveyed the information in front of him.

“No,” he said quietly and then “No! Listen to me, all of you! This does not happen today! Today, I am here and I will save all of you from this. I am the Doctor and I will protect all of you, no matter - ”

“Doctor,” Martha interrupted, thoroughly annoyed. “Would you please just roll the dice?”

The Doctor gave her a hurt look, then rolled. Martha leaned over to look at the results.

“Oops,” she said, maybe a little more happily than she should have done. “Looks like you lose!”

The Doctor scowled.
