There is no mirror in the grimy bathroom; someone wrenched it off the wall years ago. Kei stands and stares at where it would be, and touches the bruises on her face. She can feel them, soft swellings under her fingers, and she knows they'll be that grimy purple such marks always are.
It happened so quickly. A chunk of brick flung at the cops that missed its target and smacked her in the side of the cheek instead. Her teeth on that side are slightly loose - she can't stop poking them with her tongue, just to check - and she keeps tasting blood. But you can't see those things. Bruises are different. She'll look like a girlfriend who ought to ditch her man before he kills her.
This will probably kill me.
She grips the sink, the dirty, clammy porcelain real under her hands. By accepting Ryu's offer, she is committing herself to a lifetime of bruises and mouldy apartments, and she doesn't even have a boyfriend to show for it.
And it will kill me.
She'd always thought that when she made a sacrifice, it would be for her principles. But now she knows herself better. Oh, her beliefs and her conscience make this easier, but the only reason she's really staying is that she knows Ryu will never leave, and if she walks out, she'll lose him. That shouldn't be worth the bruises, but somehow it is.
