Today is Memorial Day. I know it's inherent in the name that this day is to honor fallen people, and the one in Sept is to honor those who served, but I still had to think a few seconds on that.
I find it completely ironic that we are approximately one month past the
April 30th anniversary in the Vietnam War; that COVID-19 deaths exceed American deaths in that war (though there were much more lost in VN); and that on MDW people are still willing to die for freedom...just in a different scenario. Just like April 30th signifies something different to different Vietnamese people--either the fall of Saigon or the reunification of the country, so is COVID-19.
I was curious as to what 'the other side' thinks and decided to read comments on Fox News' Facebook account. I felt the urge to dispel what I felt were non-truths, and I wanted, and did, post statistics that COVID-19 deaths as compared to influenza deaths were much more. But, and I don't know why, I clicked on the lady's profile who kept posting. There were so many comments directed at her along the lines of "you're so stupid" "you must be so dumb" etc etc. She seemed to be a grandmother, had public posts dating back several years through different presidential administrations, posted that her children are the most important to her, and more. It's so easy for everyone to hit back and quickly and forget that everyone is an actual individual human sentient being with unique particular experiences that have shaped their life course up to the point of them posting their online comments. Likewise, we have our own life experiences. This lady was older and I'm sure she's seen her share of changes and has experienced much in her life. I wonder if I, or we, could apply that lens in all of our dealings, and if we even want to.
