Edit: Reminder: Post not in real-time. This was on October 30th. We are back in cali....
Since we were in Brasov, the heart of Saxon Romania, we ate dinner the night of day 4 at a German place near the hotel and I had these amazing sausages and two large dunkelweiss brews (yum). The hotel was in the main square and the room was really cool (like an attic apartment) with several skylights, a big bed, and a big tub. Only bummer is that all these hotels outside of the Bucarest had no elevator and we were always given the top floor room (thanks, great view, but luggage....yikes)
The morning of day 5 we walked around looking at the remnants of the old fortified town, went to a cemetery, and then on to the Saxon "Black Church". In the church there was this fresco that had been covered after the reformation and restored in recent times that had Madonna above a crescent moon (no pictures allowed). I want to research that more.
We then drove to two fortified churches, Prejmer being the most fun. The church was surrounded by a donut shaped fortification that was multiple levels and a labyrinth of tunnels leading to the outer defensive walls. In the walls were the holes for pouring hot liquids on the enemy, archer and rifle holes, and even “toilet” holes (talk about biowarfare?). Our guide (and the caretakers) gave us free reign to explore the dark and musty passage ways. The church was interesting but the fort was way cool. One of my favorite things on the tour.
