I’ve realized that I don’t care for Tateno’s stories involving couples in the entertainment industry. I couldn’t stand either partner in Hero Heel (I liked the other two parties who were not chosen). I experienced a similar feeling while reading Yokan Premonition and Noise, but to a lesser extent. This is partly because I don’t care for the Tateno’s cold characters, (I’m no fan of Blue Sheep Reverie either) as well. I liked Yokan better than the other two series, but it wasn’t my favorite work by Tateno.
This series involves Akira, the lead singer in a popular band, and Sunaga, a popular actor. Akira discovers that Sunaga was once a singer in a band and spends the whole volume trying to get Sunaga to sing again, since Akira knows that singing is Sunaga’s his true passion. Volume 2 is shows how the lovers juggle their relationship with competing work schedules after Sunaga starts singing again, and reunites his band. They go through some drama and unresolved trauma, and then go back to lovers and rivals. The redeeming value of this series is that Tateno demonstrated that both parties cared, and there were no love triangles.
I’m not sure why I have such a love/hate for Tateno’s works. I love “A Bloody Kiss Tonight” (I prefer lovey-dovey) and enjoyed “How to Capture a Martini” and “How to Control a Sidecar”, another workplace series. I liked “Martini” even with the bottom’s promiscuity, and “Sidecar”, even with rape because I cared about the characters. It’s Tateno’s cold characters that I could care less about.
I probably won’t re-read this series, but it wasn’t as bad as Hero Heel, which I really disliked. At least the characters weren’t cruel like they were in Hero Heel.
