I found my parents' wedding announcement in Jet magazine (Jul 10, 1969) and I feel quite proud, even though this is how my dad's second wife found out he had remarried.
Fun to have, but I found something even better. Now, before Motown, my Dad worked for Martin Luther King Jr. I was invited to the King Center in Atlanta after my father's death in 2005, where I was told that they still had many of my father's papers. Unfortunately, they said, my father kept a low profile while working for Dr. King and the few pictures that had been taken of them together by the staff photographer at the time had been stolen from the photographer's house (along with the rest of her collection of King photos) years ago. I had given up hope on ever finding such a picture, but lo and behold, I found something very special tonight in Ebony's archives:
More specifically, this is from the May 1969 issue. That's my dad next to MLK. Hm... is that a cane or an umbrella in his left hand? It obviously wasn't taken in May 1969, but there was no clue as to who took the pic or when, so I guess it were just in Johnson Publishing's archives. Now this will go into a family album for the girls.
The birds are beginning to chirp outside and that's my cue to go to bed!
