“We’re closing in on him,” Nathan murmured, hoping he could calm Audrey down a little. She had been anxious all the way out here. Nathan could understand but he couldn’t allow himself the luxury to worry as well. They needed to focus now.

“He’s not dead, right?” Audrey asked.

“He’s not dead,” Nathan said but couldn’t hide the little doubt in his voice. Two missing people over the last days. Both times their boats had been found floating on the open sea. No bodies found so far but it was clear where they were. And now Duke’s boat was gone as well. They immediately had searched him over the GPS on his phone. And now they were closing in on him.

“There!” Audrey shouted all of a sudden. “There’s the Rouge.”

Nathan got as close as possible and Audrey had gotten the big flashlight out, immediately shining onto the deck. His eyes widened in shock when he saw a movement out of the corner of his eye, just at the edge of the light. He grabbed Audrey’s hand and moved the flashlight just in time to see someone falling right into the water.

“No! Duke!” Nathan acted instinctively, toeing off his shoes and getting rid of his jacket. He climbed on the edge of their little boat and jumped into the water.

“Nathan? What are you doing?” He heard Audrey’s voice when he swam over to the spot where Duke had gone down.

Nathan though couldn’t explain himself, didn’t have much time. He just hoped Audrey would do the right thing, came after him and helped him get Duke out of the freezing water. Right now he was really grateful that he couldn’t feel. The icy water would make this task a lot harder. But like this he could concentrate fully on swimming and getting to Duke. He dived down at the spot where he thought Duke had fallen into the water.

It was dark, almost pitch black. Nathan could barely see anything and the little hope that he might be able to save Duke still, faded quickly. He couldn’t see. He couldn’t feel. There was no way that he’d find Duke in this dark pit of water.
With a deep gasp he came back up, trying to get as much air into his lungs as possible.

“Did you find him?” He heard Audrey’s distant voice before he dived under the water again. He tried to look around, tried to find any little sign of Duke or something else. A movement. Just anything.
And then the darkness got brighter. Nathan had no idea what was going on but he saw a hand below him getting swallowed by the darkness. He hurriedly swam down to it and stretched his own hand towards it. “Come on,” he thought. “Just a little further.”

He couldn’t lose Duke. Not like this.

So he channeled every last strength he had left and after a hard kick of his leg he managed to curl his hand tightly around Duke’s. As soon as Nathan was sure that he had him, Nathan turned around and swam back up to the surface. It was easy with the light that came from above to know where up was. Still, Nathan did what he’d learned and released a little air from his lungs, following the little bubbles to the surface.

He broke through the surface with a deep breath, pulling Duke after him. “Audrey!” he called out immediately.

A life belt landed right next to him and he grabbed for it, trying to haul Duke on top of it. “Duke? Duke!”

Duke desperately drew in one ragged breath after another. Nathan let out a relieved sigh, leaned a little on to him while they were pulled back by Audrey to their boat.

“Oh god, Duke, are you ok?” She mumbled while she helped Duke to be hauled into the boat. Nathan tried to push from the water as best he could. As soon as Duke was on the boat, Nathan climbed over the ladder back on board.

Audrey had positioned Duke on the ground and threw a blanket over him. “Are you ok?” she repeated, more firmly now, forcing Duke to look at her.

He nodded, didn’t say anything, but he nodded. He seemed a little disoriented but he almost drowned. Nathan could live with disorientation if he was still breathing.

“Oh, thank god.” Audrey threw herself around Duke, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck. “We thought you were…” she said but trailed off. “After your boat was gone, just like the others.”

“I’m fine,” Duke croaked and coughed right after. “What happened?”

Nathan had finally managed to move and crawl over to them. “I wanted to ask you that. You’re driving out in the middle of the night and then just jump into the water?”

“Jump?” Duke asked incredulously. “Can’t remember jumping.”

“We can figure this out later,” Audrey said and rubbed over Duke’s upper arms. “We need to get you back to Haven and to hospital.”

Duke wrapped the blanket tighter around his shoulders, shivering. “Not gonna argue.”

“Nathan, take the other blanket!” Audrey said and took the steering wheel. “You’re freezing, too, even if you don’t notice.”

Nathan grabbed the blanket, threw it around his shoulders and sat down next to Duke. Although they were both pretty cold and freezing body heat would do them some good. “You really can’t remember?”

“No, can’t even remember how I got out here. You’ll take care of the Rouge, right?”

“Already informed the coast guard to collect it,” Audrey shouted over to them.

“Thanks, Audrey,” Duke whispered and curled up on himself. “There’s one thing I remember.” It was barely a whisper. Too quiet for Audrey to hear. This was only meant for Nathan.

“What is it?” He whispered back.

“I felt happy.”
