For a few seconds Shiro was like frozen. He watched the five beams that were falling from the skies - until they all crashed down. Shiro was convinced to had felt the tremor of the impact even in the Atlas.
“Paladins? Please, come in,” he reacted after a few seconds, returning to his role as Captain. But there was only silence. Shiro was smart enough to know that trying again wouldn’t bring him anything. So he turned to his crew. “Veronica, tell me you’ve got something!” Since the attack of this robot they had been completely drained. Not just the Atlas but all of them. Shiro could feel it to the mark of his bones. His energy was low and he could barely stand. But right now he didn’t care about this. They needed to help the Paladins. There was still a slight chance that they might be alive and Shiro would cling to that hope until he had seen their dead bodies with his own eyes.
“There is still no power. So we don’t have a map. Communication is the only thing that’s still working.”
“So we have no idea where they crashed?”
Veronica turned around in her seat, “Not exactly, no.” Shiro could clearly see in her face that she was as worried as he was. Her brother was out there as well.
“FME Fighters? What’s your status?”, he asked after activating the comm.
“I’m sorry, sir, but our Fighters are completely drained as well. This … thing has done some real damage.” This ship wasn’t like the lions, Shiro couldn’t just charge them with his own inner power. Or could he?
Shiro had no idea how he changed the Atlas in the first place but he did it. He had been a Paladin of Voltron once, maybe that had given him some understanding of Quintessence that was hard to learn otherwise. Linked with his new Altean arm he had been capable to transform the Atlas to a robot somehow. So maybe he could charge it up again.
Shiro closed his eyes to concentrate. It always had been easier to connect to his lion this way but this ship was completely different. There was no soul inside, nothing to connect to, or maybe Shiro was just too tired to find it. He was exhausted. His fight with Sendak had done some damage and after the fight with this hostile robot Shiro felt as if he was about to fall over.
But this couldn’t be the end. Not like that.
The moment Keith had saved him Shiro had thought that it would be over. That they did it. That they actually won. But then came this robot.
And now Shiro was facing the possibility that the paladins were dead. That Keith was dead.
“There must be something we can do. Coran?” Coran always had some good ideas and he probably wanted to find Allura as desperately as he wanted to find Keith. “Do you have an idea?”
“We are almost drained completely of all our quintessence. At the moment there is nothing we can do except go out there on foot.”
“We don’t know where they’ve fallen. It could be too late then and I’m not accepting that. I won’t give up on them.” He hit his fist against the railing in front of him. He couldn’t lose them. Not now.
And all of a sudden there was a movement in the corner of his eye. Shiro moved his head to see black fur. “Kosmo?” he asked the moment the bridge of the Atlas in front of him vanished. In the next second he found himself in the cockpit of the black lion, just right behind Keith’s seat.
“Keith!” he yelled immediately and made his way around the seat.
He found the boy slumped in his seat. Motionless. Shiro’s heart stopped for a moment. “No,” he whispered and kneeled in front of him. “No, Keith, don’t do this to me.” Cautiously he pulled on his helmet which had a big scratch on his visor. They would need to fix that later. Coran probably could fix that.
Underneath, Keith’s head was covered in blood. It was in his beautiful hair, his entire left side was full of it.
Tears filled Shiro’s eyes at the sight of that. “Please, don’t,” he whispered again while he reluctantly reached out to look for Keith’s pulse. He was afraid what he might find. But there was definitely a thrumbing that he could feel under his fingertips. Shiro sighed in relief and gave himself this little moment to take a breath.
“I’ll get you out of here,” he said now, more determined. This little win had given him back some of his old energy. He felt stronger than before. He moved a little so he could see past Keith’s seat. “Kosmo, could you bring us-” Shiro stopped when he saw the cosmic wolf lying on the ground. Shiro jumped up and rushed over to the animal. Kosmo still had his eyes open but he whimpered. “Hey, buddy, what’s wrong? You’re tired too?” That was the only explanation. Shiro had no idea how Kosmo did his cosmic beaming but maybe it had something to do with quintessence as well. And they all got drained of that. He petted him gently. “All is good. I’ll take care of him.”
Honestly though Shiro had no idea how he should do that. He looked out of the window, trying to determine where they were. They could be anywhere and although Keith was still alive his injury looked serious enough. Time was of the essence.
There was only one thing that Shiro could try to do.
Cautiously he pulled Keith up into his arms and lay him down on the floor right next to Kosmo.
Then he sat down in the seat of the black lion.
“Please, let this work,” he mumbled while reaching for the controls.
