I bet Christianity, in the form of monks through the Dark and Middle Ages, had a lot to do with the nicening up of the Western world. Then a great deal of credit goes to the philosophy of the Enlightenment; but however much a modern intellectual may be against self-sacrifical religions, you would be rooting for the monks if you looked deep enough into our Western past.
You wonder how many of us have actually socially evolved, when you look at the kinds of video games people love to immerse themselves in, or movies about bad guys, death, and pain, and the mind-numbing racket that passes for music among many. Would an alien visitor be more surprised at a person who wallows in this lifestyle being for torturing cats, or against?
