Kaoru's Wiki Character History:
Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin were born into an insanely wealthy family. Their soft-spoken father manages a computer software company, and their mother is a very rich fashion designer, whom the twins very obviously take after. Hikaru is the older twin, and Kaoru is the younger of the two. They were born on June 9th, they are Gemini, and blood type B.
Growing up, the twins were a single working unit. There were very few differences between the two of them, and the only person who ever knew the difference between them was their mother, who pretended not to know. Their parents were usually absent on business when they were young, so they were primarily raised by maids. The two went through many maids as a child, only ever finding one that they liked. She taught them how to cry in public to get what they wanted, and many other ways to manipulate people around them. Unfortunately, she ended up stealing from their family. The boys caught her and offered her the combination to the safe she wanted into, if she could win a game they called the "Which One is Hikaru?" game. However, she could not do it. She stole the combination from them, and as she made her escape, she told the twins that no one would ever be able to tell the difference between them. Because of these words, Kaoru and Hikaru grew up thinking that no one would ever understand them.
All through elementary and middle school, the boys shut everyone around them out, paying attention only to each other. They would play cruel jokes on girls that liked them, breaking their hearts without the slightest bit of guilt. Anyone who tried to come close to them was coldly brushed away, or even flat-out told off. The only person who never gave up on them was Tamaki Suoh, a boy from France who was a year older than the twins. He approached them and asked them to join a club he was starting; a Host Club, to entertain ladies with too much free time. The twins told him they would join if he could tell which twin was which, and give them a good reason for his answer. In the end, he succeeded, and the two kept their promise: they joined the Host Club, travelling up to the high school every day to be there.
Their first year of high school, the twins continued to be a part of Host Club. One day, a scholarship student named Haruhi Fujioka stumbled into the club room. The poor kid was immediately overwhelmed, being a person of rather low income and not having any social standing. In a bit of a freakout, Haruhi broke an 8-million-yen vase, and became the Host Club's "dog" as payment. Over the course of the next couple of days, Haruhi became a full-fledged host, and each member of the club figured out that Haruhi was a girl; everyone but Kyoya originally thought she was a boy.
Immediately, the addition of Haruhi to the group began a chain reaction of very entertaining events. She was a very fun toy, and one that Tamaki seemed to take a very strong interest in. The result of this was a strong meddling in the lives of a few of their classmates, a crazy physical exam day, and an even crazier woman taking over the club and proclaiming to be Kyoya's fiancee. All in all, it was fun and new... but nothing to dwell on.
No, those events started when Haruhi revealed that she could tell the difference between Hikaru and Kaoru without even having to think about it. She knew the subtle differences between them right off the bat, and as invasive as that felt, there was something comforting underneath it all. Still, they couldn't really show that. Instead, they bothered Haruhi about coming to her house; it would be interesting, and asking made Tamaki freak out. When she said no to all three of them, Hikaru and Kaoru staged an elaborate plan in which they fought and argued, turning on one another entirely. They took drastic measures and dyed their hair--Kaoru blue, and Hikaru pink--and began to argue loudly every time they saw one another. When they took to extreme forms of warfare, and Kaoru threatened to curse Hikaru with a black magic doll, Haruhi got involved, and told them that if they didn't quit, they would never be allowed to come to her house.
The twins then gave up the act. Haruhi had given them permission to come over if they quit... So, that's what they did. Immediately, they dropped the ruse and started hanging on one another and laughing loudly, proving to everyone that they had planned the whole thing. The next day, the twins were playing the "Which one is Hikaru?" game with some of their guests, hair still dyed. The girls guessed that the one with blue hair was Kaoru, and pink was Hikaru. They told her she was right, but Haruhi cut in and said they had changed dye colors. They had... but the fact that she could still tell was shocking and moving at the same time.
At this point, Haruhi became someone important to them, and in turn, the rest of the club members began to get closer to them as well. When she was hurt at the beach, the twins reacted violently, beating the offenders near to death in their worry. They pushed their pride aside and crossdressed when they thought she would leave because she wanted to be around women. When the Newspaper Club tried to attack Tamaki and his family, the twins stepped in with Kyoya's help and took them down. Over the school year, the Host Club became something they treasured.
Over the summer break, when Haruhi got a volunteer job, Tamaki demanded that they all go out to find her. At the inn where she was working, the young men of the club refused to leave her side. However, there was only one room left open. And so, everyone but Kyoya began to compete for the room. The twins won the "refreshing" competition via accident, when a vase nearly fell from a window and hit Haruhi, and Kaoru's face was scratched in the process of tackling her out of the way. Hikaru freaked out over the injury, and their ~brotherly love~ won the contest. They played it off as it being an act, but Hikaru was shaking in fear later, when they were alone.
Over the course of the next day, a boy from Haruhi's past struck a deep jealousy chord with Hikaru. He lashed out at him again and again, until Haruhi outright slapped him. He ran away, confused at his outrage, and Kaoru followed him. He ended up pretending to be Hikaru to apologize, though Haruhi saw right through him. At this point, Kaoru had realized that Hikaru cared deeply for Haruhi, and that she could help him expand his world. And so, he decided to help his brother along, and asked Haruhi out on a date. The next day, he pretended to be sick, and sent Hikaru in his place. The two of them had plenty of fun until a storm started and Haruhi tried to get them to take her childhood friend's car back to the inn. Hikaru threw a jealous fit and ran off, unaware of Haruhi's fear of storms until Tamaki called him and yelled at him. He went after her, at that point, and stayed with her through the storm, and through the whole ordeal, started to form a deeper bond with her. Kyoya asked Kaoru if he had planned for the date going too well; what if they fell in love? But Kaoru just smiled and said it was too early for that. Hikaru was... kind of a dummy.
As the school year progressed, Kaoru watched Haruhi and Hikaru get closer and closer, bit by bit. He liked her, and even if he didn't notice it, Kaoru certainly did. Having slight feelings for her himself, he had no problems with helping Hikaru in all of his endeavors, competing with Tamaki to gain her attention and make her happy. They took advantage of every detail they could to get her over their sempai, including using their being in the same grade during the Halloween event for their school. They grouped with her for a scaring contest, and when outside forces got involved and scared the everliving daylights out of them, they scattered, and Hikaru ended up alone with Haruhi. Kaoru was with their student council president.
When Hikaru calmed down after getting away from danger, though caught in a net with Haruhi, he realized that his brother wasn't with him. Having no idea where he was, the older twin absolutely freaked out, leaving Haruhi chasing after him and lagging far behind when he took off to find him. He didn't even notice he'd done it until after finding Kaoru and making sure he was safe. His choice of priorities touched and comforted the secretly apprehensive Kaoru, who was glad to see that he was still the most important person to Hikaru, regardless of how much longer he had to enjoy that luxury.
Not long after Halloween, a young man named Kasanoda came to get their sempai, Mori's help. He wanted to learn how to have friends. Over the next few days, the entire Host Club banded together on Mori's behalf to help the young man. It took some unconventional means and a little bit of a surprising twist, but eventually, they brought out Kasanoda's charm. Wanting to thank Haruhi, who had been the biggest help, he went to go find her, walking in on her while she was changing. Her gender exposed, Kasanoda was forced by the Host Club to keep it a secret. Unfortunately, he also seemed to be developing a crush on her, and that meant there would be even more competition for the twins and Tamaki.
But even with all of their free time, there wasn't too much to be spared. The school festival was approaching... and they had to start planning!
It will be during this stage of wait that Kaoru subconsciously hears a Call from a faraway world...
Character Personality:
Kaoru Hitachiin is a person that very, very few truly understand. He's part of a set: his twin, Hikaru, has always been the center of his tiny world, and is the only person to see his true nature on a regular basis. The same is true in reverse: Hikaru's true self is shown rarely, and the vast majority of the time, it is only to Kaoru. The two of them have an identical outer shell; the side of them that the public sees.
Outwardly, the twins are both obnoxious, scheming, manipulative, perfectly harmonized, entitled brats. They can and will use everyone around them for their own entertainment, as they are constantly bored, and hardly ever thinking of anyone but themselves. Their pranks can range from small jokes to insanely complicated plots, and the only thing that varies between friend and foe is the cruelty level. When they aren't pranking the masses, the twins can be found flirting with one another to a dangerous degree for attention, laughing at others' misfortune, or criticising every little thing in their field of vision--especially when it comes to "commoner" items, which the both of them are quite infatuated with.
In short, they are the biggest pain in the necks in the world, they know it, and they wouldn't have it any other way. However, that doesn't mean they're that identical in every way. Sure, their faces may be exactly the same, as are their bodies, but their true personalities are quite different, and only the Host Club and their mother know those differences.
Behind the scenes, Kaoru and Hikaru are very different people. In a way, they balance out when they're together in public, but their personalities are opposite in many ways. Even though they are a working unit, Hikaru was always slightly more of a leader (after all, he's the "pitcher" in their relationship), having a much more competitive edge. With him taking that one step forward on the front lines, Kaoru has had time, especially after joining the Host Club and being forced to spend time with strangers (gasp!!), to develop a deep observational trait. He sees Hikaru make choices first, notices the outcomes, and can base his own decisions on the data he collects. This process has made him far more mellow inside than his brother, who tends to lash out at anything that upsets him. Kaoru has a tendency to swallow those emotions until they start to affect his disposition, and then curb them until he can get rid of them. It's self-destructive and hurts more in the long run, whereas Hikaru throws fits that he can get over within a day or so.
Kaoru ends up hurting himself by not voicing what he really wants. This isn't to say that all of his wants are entirely selfish; he wants Hikaru's companionship to be unwavering, yes, but he wants Hikaru's happiness even more. Kaoru will swallow his entitlement if it means making his brother happy and helping him grow. He knows Hikaru is kind of a dummy, and doesn't notice the emotions of the people closest to him; this is especially true with Kaoru, as Hikaru is so used to them being on the same wavelength that he doesn't notice that Kaoru has become much more insightful than he is. Kaoru uses this to his advantage, when striving to help Hikaru expand his world, to keep his brother from realizing the truth.
That truth is that Kaoru is afraid of letting Hikaru go, even a little bit. The thought terrifies him; Hikaru is the single most important person in his life, and he doesn't want to lose him. But it's for that same reason that he knows he has to push down that fear and that possessiveness, to give Hikaru a chance to branch out and find happiness. It hurts him, because a large part of him wants Hikaru to never leave, and even more because he knows Hikaru won't notice until it's far too late to turn back. And yet, because it's best that Hikaru does make connections with other people, and find people to love him for who he is, Kaoru will constantly push his own emotions down and act like nothing's wrong, droppings hints so subtle that literally no one notices.
Beyond Hikaru, Kaoru does value several other people, even if it's significantly less than how he feels about his brother. He puts his friends before himself, personally, even if it doesn't seem that way all the time. Since Hikaru values Kaoru and keeps him within arm's reach, and is much more self-centered than the younger twin, Kaoru syncs up with him and tends to act outwardly like he doesn't care at all one way or another. Still, he is self-sacrificing much more than he is selfish, and alone, he will put others before himself and fade into the background. However, it is best that Kaoru have some sort of company. If left entirely alone, he will get lost in his thoughts and concerns about his friends and Hikaru's future, and the more those things eat at him, the more they will bottle up.
Being so obsessed with his brother, and despite the few friends he does have, Kaoru probably won't realize that his own world is still tiny until Hikaru's gets much bigger. Hikaru is, and always will be, the most important thing in the universe to him. But even so, Kaoru is lucky enough to have a few select people that he can fall back on if he absolutely needs to. He and Hikaru's world was broken into by a single person. Tamaki Suoh was the first one to start to understand them, taking them out of their cold, antisocial shells and thrusting them into the world. Even still, their walls were thick; the Host Club was a way for them to learn to interact, but it took a very long time before the other members of the club started to understand them. However, when those walls started to slowly come down, Hikaru and Kaoru both found something worth fighting for that wasn't each other: Haruhi Fujioka.
Haruhi is, to both of them, someone very precious. She was the first and only person to almost instantly break through and see the differences in them simply at a glance. She was the first person the twins felt affection for. She was also the first person that Kaoru knew would be good for Hikaru. Kaoru would undoubtedly fight for Haruhi's sake, himself, however, and he does care for her quite a lot. He's jealous of her, in the fact that she's taken Hikaru's eyes off of him, but at the same time, she's very important to both of them. In short, she's the perfect person to bring Hikaru out of his shell, and Kaoru knows that all too well. He trusts Haruhi with that, even though it stings and it's the most difficult thing he's ever done, to subtly push Hikaru toward her.
Due to Haruhi's unintentional invasion of their world, Hikaru and Kaoru both started to relax; not enough to let people inside, but enough to let themselves enjoy life a little. Thanks to that, the memories they started to make in the Host Club were close to their hearts, and the members of the club started to become their friends. They realized that they have Tamaki to thank for the opportunities, and Haruhi to thank for opening their eyes a bit. A lot, in Kaoru's case. Thanks to them, the twins have a whole groupe of people that will put up with their impossible behavior, and love them for who they are on the inside; be it volatile, selfish, and rude... or flighty, calculating, and self-destructive.
Powers:
To be entirely honest, he has none. He's a human teenager, who just happens to have insanely good looks and unfathomable wealth. He's able to throw heavy objects at a high speed, however, and does have a tendency to be able to jump very, very, very high in the air--but this only occurs when he is with Hikaru, and when they are pouncing on someone in dire need of a makeover.

First person:
[The scene is quite the disaster. It's dusty and dirty, like no one's cleaned for well over a week. The trash cans are filled, and the redheaded teen on the couch does not look too pleased. Kaoru picks up a pillow on the couch and tries to fluff it. Dust clouds the air, and the poor boy starts coughing, trying to wave it away before he gets up and grabs his phone, walking out of the room.]
Alright, I think we have a problem. It's high time someone told us where the maids are around here. I mean, this is a big city. You have to have them somewhere, right? Not everywhere in this city is a total dump.
At least, I sure hope not.
Third Person:
The large buildings had always been so full of energy. In every hall, every room, a gentle liveliness unmatched rang clear, setting the tone of pristine youth within the walls of Ouran Academy. All around, the prideful chatter of the boys and the hushed and excited giggles of the girls filled the air. It created a place of comfort for those involved, and left a sense familiarity. At home, those voices were fresh and new each day.
Here, they were echoes.
Walking the streets of this new city, Kaoru Hitachiin saw no one. There were plenty signs of life, but none of that energy that he associated with being home. There were no bright and energetic laughs and giggles, nor squeals from the host club's guests being flattered to the point of their hearts overflowing. There was no talk of vacationing spots, or upcoming events. Nothing of family endeavors, or climbs in the social or academic ranks.
There were no loud noises, shouts and cries of dramatic nature. There were no cold and calculating comments. There was no laughter, and even the silence was just too quiet to be normal. The boss was not here. Kyoya-senpai was not here. Mori-senpai and Honey-senpai were gone, as well. And Haruhi...
Kaoru's chest tightened, and his eyes lowered to the ground. He missed her already... But he knew that Hikaru, his twin whose footsteps were naturally in time with his own, would be in more pain than he himself was. To comfort him, Kaoru squeezed his hand, knowing the message would be received. He would always be there for his brother, and when there was a time of need, he would make sure Hikaru knew that.
Deep down, Kaoru knew he was going to have a hard time without his friends. But Hikaru was the center of his world. He could make due with what he had, as long as that was his brother.
'I guess it's just us.'
That sentence made his jaw tighten, but Kaoru was set in his resolve. He wanted his friends... but Hikaru needed him more than they did, and quite frankly, Kaoru was sure he could survive in this strange city they had been kidnapped to.
After all, he wasn't alone.
