I'm not so great at introductions, but I've been meaning to post for some time. Thanks,
avad for the kick in the rear :)
10% has become an increasingly important part of my life this past year. I'm a grad student and live mostly on loans, so I've been torn about giving out of what isn't really mine. But the reality is that the school "budgets" way more than I need and giving 10% of that is not a burden. I hate the thought of being frivolous with money, but I am sometimes; and the less I have, the fewer useless, material things I buy. I also feel like school reduces the amount of time I have to invest in people, which I believe is as essential as monetary investment. For the past eight years, I've been so blessed by having access to amazing youth in my life to mentor and learn from. Now, I'm lucky if I spend two days per week with kids, and rarely are our relationships of depth. Giving 10% makes me feel like I'm doing something in the meantime until I can give more time.
A couple of my current promotions...
Young Heroes is a great project, run in partnership with Peace Corps Swaziland, for sponsoring families (child headed households) who have been orphaned by AIDS.
Kageno was started by a guy who was in Peace Corps with me in Kenya. They focus on sustainable development of health care, AIDS prevention & treatment, potable water, education and agriculture in impoverished communities. You can read more about the specific communities and projects on the website.
