Speed sat down on the sofa and opened his laptop. He didn’t normally bring work home with him but it was getting late and it was Friday and he didn’t feel like sitting in his lab to write this report. He opened the case file and laid it down on the coffee table. He flipped through a few papers, referred to his notes, and then started typing out his report.

From the doorway Cloe watched her human. She couldn’t figure out what he was doing but she knew it didn’t involve her and that simply wasn’t acceptable. She watched as Speed swung his legs up onto the sofa and leaned back against the armrest. She wandered over and paced up and down the floor in front of the sofa deciding on the best angle.

She hopped up at the far end and walked up next to Speed’s legs until she reached the laptop. She sniffed at the back of the screen before rubbing the side of her snout on the corner, giving it her scent. Speed raised an eyebrow at the little cat.

“Is that yours now?” he asked.

Cloe meowed and repeated the rubbing move. Speed chuckled and went back to his report. Cloe stopped and stared at him. She obviously had failed to make her point. She squeezed past the laptop and pawed at Speed’s hand. Speed rolled his eyes and continued typing. She pawed him again this time with her claws slightly extended.

Speed yelped. “Ouch! Put the claws away, will you.”

But pulling his hand away gave the little cat an opening. She casually stepped up onto the computer, walked to the middle and sat down. Speed picked her up and placed her onto the floor. He looked back at the laptop’s screen.

“lkdf pq cpoij;o cpwoixp fcjpot roicnij; co alc woeiuxaoj hj;,” he read. “Great,” he muttered as he hit the backspace key.

He glared down at the cat. She looked up at him as if to say, “What?” He shook his head and went back to typing his report. Cloe hopped up again this time landing right on the laptop keyboard. Speed grabbed her up quickly but not before she’d added some more to his report. He tucked the little cat under his arm and moved the laptop to the coffee table.

“Okay, you win,” he said.

He decided to leave the report for later and make a start on dinner. Half an hour later Horatio arrived home after a late meeting. He found Speed in the kitchen and gave him a quick kiss.

“You get that report finished?” he asked.

“Almost,” Speed said. “I got interrupted,” he added glancing down at Cloe. Horatio chuckled. “Laptop’s on the coffee table.”

Horatio smiled and gave him another quick kiss. He wandered into the living room and opened the laptop. He sat down and started reading the report. He was happy with the way the case had come together and with the way Speed had reported on it, until he got to the last sentence.

He cocked his head to one side and read, “lfsdjf ijei kjsdpoi jjrpoi p492 oiewpo 9283492 fhd djsopwq kiiejowq”
