Every Sunday morning Danny goes to church. He crosses himself at the font like he’d seen his mami and abuela do when he was little, and he listens to the prayers. He wonders why the words don’t ring true anymore.

Every Monday he goes to work and tries to save people. Sometimes he succeeds, sometimes he fails. The failures really used to bother him, but now it’s like a layer of cotton has been wrapped around his heart and soul, and everything is dampened.

Every Tuesday and Thursday nights Danny goes to meetings. He listens faithfully to all the stories and sometimes he even tells his own. “My name is Danny and I’m an alcoholic.” Those words used to be painful; it ripped through his pride to admit that he needed help from anyone, even friends of Bill W. Now they roll easily and meaninglessly off his tongue.

Wednesday nights he volunteers at the local community center, teaching English to immigrants, both legal and otherwise. He’s never told anyone there that he’s an FBI agent. Sometimes it’s nice to pretend his life is different

On Friday nights he goes to bars and finds beautiful people to fuck. Men, women, it doesn’t matter. Just someone warm and willing. For a little while, he feels alive and wonders why his life isn’t like this all the time, and what exactly made it change.

Weekends are mostly spent at Rafi’s, playing with his nephews and trying to avoid talking with Sylvia about why he’s so different lately.

Sunday nights he lies alone in his bed, tears in his eyes, and wonders if his life has always been so empty, if he has always felt so desolate and alone. He thinks the answer is no, but he’s not sure why. Finally he sleeps. He does not dream.

His life goes on like this for what seems like forever, and he has lost all hope of ever feeling normal and alive and happy again. Then one Monday morning as he walks toward the elevator, the doors slide open in front of him and Martin walks out.

Martin looks different somehow- fragile and thin but as real and determined as ever. Danny stares at him in astonishment and without warning he remembers it all.

And as he watches Martin walk away, suddenly he can feel everything- and inside he crumbles.
