Most saw magic one of two ways. Either it was something wonderful to be embraced, something to covet and chase after with all one's heart. Or they saw it was something horrific and terrifying, something to be shunned and verbally denounced. What they never seemed to think about was what it took out of the person performing the magic. Especially when that person was performing the magic on themselves.
In theory, in planning, it was the most simple of things. Distract and confuse so that no one noticed that that had once been flesh and bones was suddenly nothing more than vapor and cloth with the application of something so innocuous as water. In the planning stages it was little more than misdirection, and the sort of magic that Elphaba had shown herself to be adept at. Except this time she needed to resume the original form. Unlike what she had done to Boq and Fiyero, this time she had to do it right, couldn't rush through it and do what would work rather than what was wanted and needed. This time she would do it right.
But that didn't mean it would hurt any less than the times before.
Elphaba couldn't pretend that what she'd done, what Nessa had done, hadn't brought pain to the men in their lives. Boq to this day still suffered. Fiyero had been saved from so much pain, but much more had been lost in doing so. So much that she couldn't afford to lose this time. Water would be the trigger, her words already spoken before they ever entered the chamber. That child could keep the slippers. Glinda could do whatever she pleased with them. Lines had been drawn and choices had been made and in the end any pain was worth escape. There wasn't a pain that wasn't worth all she was about to do.
That didn't mean it wouldn't hurt, though. What was gain if there wasn't a price paid in return?
