Hey! I'm famous among obessive followers of publishing trade mags!

Word of my book sale appeared yesterday in Publisher's Weekly (which you know, because I found out about it here at 10ers) and today in Publisher's Marketplace.

in today's issue of Publishers Lunch (a daily newsletter from the Publishers Marketplace group), under noteworthy deals:

"Erin Bow's PLAIN KATE, the story of an orphan girl with a gift for carving; hers is a world of white magicians, talking cats, and roaming gypsy clans; it's a world where shadows can raise the dead, where people fear there is magic in a knife, to Arthur Levine at Arthur A. Levine Books, in a six-figure deal, at auction, in a two-book deal, by Emily van Beek of Pippin Properties."

I like convoluted incomplete sentence there; it makes sense only if you read it as a wedding announcement.

And from yesterday's Publisher's Weekly e-newsletter "Children's Bookshelf"  (which I wish I had found years ago -- great resource -- thanks, guys, for pointing it out to me yesterday):

"In a six-figure deal at auction, Arthur A. Levine bought North American English-language rights to the novel Plain Kate, plus a second book, for his eponymous imprint at Scholastic. The books are by poet Erin Bow, in her children's book debut. Inspired by Russian fairytales, Plain Kate is the story of an orphan girl with a gift for carving. Emily van Beek of Pippin Properties did the deal."

Glee!

I have no idea whether this is a big deal.  Seems like a big deal.  Sam (the assistant at Pippin) says a couple of scouts have called for more news.  I don't know what that means either, but I have asked her to try to conceal the fact that the last time I played softball competitively, I batted a .026 on the season.  (But it was a GREAT hit.)

plain kate, erin bow
