I was at Dragon*Con, on a bunch of dark fantasy panels. Some panelists appeared on more than one panel with me, including the editor of Dark Horse Comics. After our last panel, I chatted with him and offered to send him one of my books. He liked dark and funny, so I sent him my first adult book, Hell's Belles. A month later, I ran a Twitter contest, and he was one of the 1st 10 people to RT the post, so he was a winner. When I emailed him to confirm his address, he asked me if I'd like to do a project for him, that he'd been known to help many an author transition over to comics.
I was like, Sure!
And then he asked if I'd be comfortable writing in the Buffyverse, to do a Tales of the Vampires story.
And I was like, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH.
Cool thing: At one point during our phone conversation, he said, "Jackie, that's Joss on line one. I'll have to call you back." And I was like, sure thing. But inside, I was like, OMG THAT'S JOSS WHEDON ON LINE ONE!!!
So the morale of the story: Go to conventions, get on panels, bring copies of your business cards and your books, and talk to people. You never know what might happen.
