Summary: Tiki insists they play poker while Allen fights with the pain killers that are demanding he sleep.
“This is embarrassing.” Allen breathed as he stared at the royal flush Tiki had laid out and frowned heavily. The fingers of his innocence bearing hand shook and could barely hold the cards right. He felt like a novice all over again. Three times the other had caught him attempting to cheat, hell anyone could have seen through those sorry tries at it. He vaguely wondered if he could get away with drowning himself in the sink.
One look at his companion’s amused expression told the exorcist he was going to be stuck in the living world just for Tiki’s entertainment. He uttered a curse as he discarded with his flesh hand and picked up a few cards. He didn’t even bother cheating this time. There was no point to it until his hands could move quick enough to fool the Noah. The exorcist just glared at the other professional cheater and tried for a rude finger gesture.
The dark haired man just smiled as he tilted his head slightly. “Is that an offer lad?” He couldn’t help but laugh at the answering sputter and murderous look thrown his way. He just relaxed and observed how the other’s fingers shook as he tried to hold the cards in the crimson hand. Tiki could only guess how much pain the boy would be in if he didn’t have him high as a kite on pain killers. Which explained why the polite demeanor was fading to be replaced by the harsher and street wise boy he’d always suspected might exist within.
It wasn’t any surprise really especially after fighting him in the Ark and watching him take on the Earl. In the Noah’s mind’s eye he could see the almost regal figure the other had cut that day. He banished the images while taking a heavy drag of his cigarette. “How’s the hand?”
“Not even a twinge, what the hell was in those pills you gave me?” Allen breathed as he flicked his silver gray eye with its shot pupil in the other’s direction. He shifted faintly and scratched at the bandages over his curse eye. He shrugged and started to peel them off until his hand got smacked.
“Stop that, you don’t know if it will still hurt when the meds wear off.” Tiki admonished before reshuffling the cards while the other was frowning at him. It really was cruel to play a game of cards when the kid couldn’t focus on more than one thing at the moment. No one ever said he was a nice guy.
“You dodged my question.” The boy slurred at him this time and wagged a scolding finger. “Bad Tiki, no smokes.” He added as if on an after thought before reaching for the cards.
“I didn’t dodge. I’m just waiting for you to forget the question.” The Noah answered as he handed over seven cards to the questing fingers. He watched the boy fight the other drugs that were kicking in for a moment. “If you keep trying to stay awake you’re going to get sick.”
“I will not, I’ll just act drunk. You’re an ass by the way.” Allen grumbled as he rubbed at his good eye. He eyed his cards and considered folding. Only good luck would make this hand better and…he quickly lost his train of thought. What the hell was he on right now? It couldn’t be anything legal, only the Order had drugs this good for making the pain go away…shit there went his train of thought again. The cards! Right carry on.
It took quite a bit of Tiki’s willpower not to laugh at the poor, sorry bastard Allen Walker right now. He waited until the other looked engrossed with the cards before he spoke up. “It’s so good to know what you think of me.” The puzzled expression in reply was priceless and he risked a snicker.
The white haired boy scowled at him and leaned forward a little. “You’re laughing at me.” He hissed while somehow still managing to slur the words. “When I find my boots I’m going to make you eat them.” He added in threat that didn’t really seem all that scary. Especially after Allen toppled over and his cards went flying.
“Should I wait up for you to follow through with your threat?” Tiki answered as he rested his chin in his palm. He just smiled at the rude finger gesture that was his answer. “I thought not. Give it up lad, just go to sleep.”
The exorcist struggled with it a moment before he mumbled in a sleepy voice. “But I don’t want to sleep.” It came out slurred as everything else he’d said since the meds kicked in. Allen cursed as he fought to stay awake, but the hand that suddenly rested on his forehead was enough to make him still. He breathed slowly as he shut his eyes and tried not to think of how warm Tiki’s fingers were. But the heat was something to focus on just before his mind lost the fight with his body.
The Noah watched the boy as his breathing evened out before he lit another cigarette. As fun as the card game had been the kid did need his sleep. Which was why, he’d slipped an extra dose into the tea he’d had Allen drink. Tiki figured the other planned to have a mug of that bitter stuff anyways. So it wasn’t like he had made him do anything unusual.
He reminded himself to make the kid eat more as he picked him up. For a teenager his size Allen was very light and skinny. It could be the fact he’s a parasite type innocence user but still. Tiki eyed the dangling hand as the boy’s head titled towards his chest. He could see just like always Allen was far too trusting. “Stupid kid.”
He was starting to lose count of how many times he questioned the logic of saving Allen’s life. The boy reminded him of one of those feral kittens at time - he was not thinking like that damn it! Tiki would have smacked a hand to his face if he didn’t have a drugged exorcist in his arms. That was Eaze not Allen Walker even then it was a bloody stretch. He was damn sure that train of thought was a sign he should haul his tail to bed too.
Working two jobs was enough to put anyone’s lights out. It was stupid of him to have not dropped off an hour ago. Even Noah had their limits and he’d long ago reached his. Tiki muttered a few choice words as he carefully dumped the boy in the guest bedroom’s bed. He pulled the covers over him like he would any kid in his care before heading for the door. This better not be a sign he was getting old, he’d really have to protest that.
The dark haired Noah glanced back in time to see the other curl up under the covers and sighed heavily. “As entertaining as you are, you make life a pain in the ass.”
