The Joy of Sex: 17th Century Style

Just how prudish were Europeans in the 17th century? Well, as it turns out, probably not as prudish as some have thought.

Have a look at this blog post about a 17th century sex manual 'The School of Venus' (its English title). It was a book the diarist Samuel Pepys considered so shocking that he waited a whole week before he went back to the shop and bought it ;)

Google have helpfully digitised it so you can read it for yourself. There are some quite startling illustrations of sex positions and a classy frontispiece featuring disembodied penises.

Enjoy!
