I'm really proud of myself. Today, I woke up, and instead of heading right to the fridge and b/ping my brains out, I went and washed, dressed, then cooked myself a proper, healthy breakfast

Hopefully this advice won't reach you too late, but here goes anyway. I am a manager in a retail store, so I get handed applications quite often. When returning applications (the No Frills lady was right, too...it's better to be thorough and accurate than to fill an application out right on the spot), be prepared for the interview to take place right then. It often won't, but on some occasions, the person you're turning your application in to should be the hiring manager (unless they're just not in the store that day), and they may have the time to sit you down and talk. Even if it's a short Q and A, be prepared with references, and be professionally dressed (even if the store doesn't have a professional dress code, it's better to be too dressy than too casual). Also, don't be afraid to look them in the eye, and when it's done, always, always, always! thank them for their time. I don't know why, but most people I've been interviewing get cocky at the end and say things like, "I hope to hear from you soon," or, "How long before I hear from you?" It's almost a guarantee I won't hire the person who asks either of those two questions. An interview doesn't guarantee the job, but leaving on a good note (like saying thanks for the opportunity), can sway any doubts.
I hope this helps you out, at least a little, and yes, you CAN do this recovery thing. Best of luck to you (and if you need more advice, drop me a line).
