The food had luckily not perished while the castle was under the curse, and according to King Trode the wine tasted better than ever. Alcohol was consumed at an alarming rate, and the more that was drunk the more raucus the party became. Even those who normally wouldn't drink, such as Elias and Jessica, were forced to take some by Yangus.

The party was winding down now and it was just the three of them. Angelo had gone off to flirt with one of the castle girls. Jessica and Elias sat together, taking sips of wine without realizing what they were drinking. Yangus was sitting on the ground singing a crude ditty about stealing horses or something, the words were too slurred to make out anything definite.

"Guv, I was wanting to ask you something," said Jessica, her voice heavy with drink. "What're you going to do now that the curse has been lifted? I mean, the four of us got really close on the journey and it'd be a pity to lose touch with everyone."

"Yeah," he agreed. "I'm sure we'll keep in touch somehow. I want to stay here in Trodain. It's been my home for so long."

"Home's important," she agreed vaguely. She fell silent, but the alcohol buzz pushed her to talk again. "Guv... Elias, I mean. There's somethin' I've been meaning to tell you, and if I don't say it now I'll regret it. I really like you. I don't mean like as friends eiter... more than that. Like..." She paused, desperate to make herself understood.

She paused, her eyes meeting with Elias's. They were both slightly intoxicated, but enough sense was left that he clearly understood what she was getting at. He gently took her hand, lacing their fingers together.

"Me too," he said softly.

"Well, Cash and Carrie were good enough to give us free tokens for the casino," said Angelo. "Why don't we take advantage of their generosity?" Surprisingly everyone else agreed and headed for the newly-opened Baccarat Casino. Angelo, the gambling expert in the group, headed for one of the slot machines right away. Yangus was more familiar with the bingo game and set up there. That left Elias and Jessica to check out the only other game in the casino, the roulette table.

"Basically you put your tokens on the number you think the ball will fall on," explained the man running the game. It seemed simple enough. Jessica volunteered to be the first to try. She put a few tokens on one of the numbers, watched the wheel spin, and groaned when she lost.

"Better luck next time," said Elias, patting her on the shoulder.

"I bet you couldn't do better!" huffed Jessica. Though she wasn't really a gambler, she was still sore she lost. But instead of taking offense, Elias merely smiled at her.

"You bet I couldn't? How much?" She was taken by surprise that he had taken the expression seriously. Before she could formulate a response, he was speaking again. "How about if I win, you go on a date with me?"

"What?" That was something she had expected from Angelo, not Elias.

"It doesn't have to be like... a fancy dinner or anything," said Elias. "Just the two of us alone for an hour or so."

"Yeah... all right," she said hesitantly, feeling the color rise in her cheeks. It seemed perfectly innocent. And really she didn't mind the idea of spending time alone with Elias. He smiled and placed his tokens on a number. The wheel spun, Jessica held her breath...

"Winner! Congratulations!"

They had all gotten close. It was hard not to, traveling together as they were. It felt kind of like a family. He liked to think of it that way; he never really had a family. He had his "father" King Trode, his "sister" Medea, and his two "brothers" Angelo and Yangus. But Jessica couldn't be placed within the little family. He couldn't seem to figure out the proper place for her. She was more than friend, more than sister to him. What he was to her was more of a mystery.

They discovered her missing from her bed after the defeat of Dhoulmagus. He was torn up; she hadn't even said goodbye to them. But he learned she hadn't done it of her own will, and when she was herself again she actually kissed him on the cheek. Of course she kissed Angelo as well, but still...

She talked to him after they restored her back to herself. Her eyes were telling him one thing and her voice another. He was certain she was trying to give him a message but whatever it was, he missed it and she didn't try to give it again. That moment was all she gave him.

Why did girls have to be so confusing?
