Hey, do you remember…?

Because I still do. I remember how we used to lie under the night sky, illuminated by the starlight, watching them as they twinkled softly above us. And the grass was always so soft and cushy under us, and it smelled faintly of tomatoes, the scent of which would stick to us like glue for hours, even after washing. We used to entwine our fingers, and I’d always end up falling asleep on your shoulder, and you’d always carry me home. I’m sure your back hasn’t quite forgotten that yet.

But of course, what I remember more than all those little everyday things, was that one time when we stayed out for so long that the sprinklers turned on and we got soaking wet. I screamed when they first clicked on, and you laughed at me, so I hit you, so you ran off laughing; I threw my shoe at your head. I missed. And once we’d collapsed on the grass again in a pile of panting limbs, you kissed me. That was our first kiss, and the most rememberable one. It tasted like the smell of grass and I can still feel how wet your cheek was when I brushed my hand against it.

Of course, that drew to an end when the light of the groundskeepers torch flashed over us. We got to our feet and ran like the wind as the poor old man yelled after us. We just laughed, stumbling across the grass of the oval, under the sprinklers, under the starlight.

Ah yes, those were the days. Do you remember them, Leo? No I don’t suppose you do… You’ve forgotten us.

But I haven’t forgotten you.

Or the lingering scent of grass...
