Summary: Having the courage to let go is harder then holding on to a failed dream.
Ginny was many things, but stupid wasn’t one of them.
She watched Harry for nearly five years, and she could hardly not notice the connection he had with Hermione. Hermione insisted that she wasn’t in love with Harry, she just loved him, when Ginny had asked her causally when the articles written about them were published.
But when she saw how the two of them looked at each other, she thought for sure that they loved each other, but they just didn’t know it. But, when Harry had kissed her, those thoughts drifted from her.
But, Ron and Hermione were going after You-Know-Who and Harry still didn’t confide and trust her. In hindsight, it seemed like Harry was just using her to get away from his many problems. She was comfort, nothing more.
It hit her hard when Hermione rushed over to Harry after the fight with the Death Eaters. The look on Harry’s face and the way he held her for a long moment said it all. And the look on Hermione’s face before she ran over to and clutched Harry with all of her might erased any doubt she might have had in her mind.
He was deeply in love with her.
And no matter what she felt for Ron, Hermione returned those feelings completely.
She had expected him to break up with her for noble reasons the moment they kissed, she had also hoped that, perhaps, after killing You-Know-Who, he’d come back to her. She had foolishly believed that Harry protecting her meant he loved her the most, but she now saw that the fact he trusted Hermione and Ron meant that she could never be first in Harry’s heart.
On the off chance Hermione and Harry never got together, Ginny knew whatever connection they had started to form would never hold. Harry would become even less of a child when he came back. Maybe he would move on from Hermione, but he would never see Ginny in the same light.
She whipped the tears off of her face and walked out into the backyard, knife in her left hand. She wished she could summon hate to Harry for loving him so much, for holding so much power over her. But, she couldn’t.
She sat down under a tree and felt the wind blow in her hair. She’s grown it long, sort of hoping that Harry would notice her more because she knew he had liked Cho, who had long hair.
She grabbed a handful of hair, cut a portion of it off, and threw the long locks in the wind. She continued to do so until her hair fell just under he ears. She knew that her hair was uneven and looked terrible. She knew her Mum would have a fit.
But she didn’t care.
She thew the knife aside, pulled her knees to her chest and looked up at the sky through the gaps between the leaves, allowing the tears to fall down her face one last time, vowing that this time would be the last time she cried over Harry.
She didn’t know what she wanted to do or how she would go about it, she’s always pictured herself with Harry. But she knew she had to let that dream go.
And she would, she realized as the last strands of red hair disappeared in the wind. She didn’t know how just yet, but it would happen.
