I saw her then, lying in the midst of our captors. The authorities treated the unconscious as already vanquished, devoting their attention to those of us still standing. This approach had never failed them. Then again, they’d never hurt her before.
I knew he had been saving up his energy for this moment. I knew that his power would be wasted if I could not draw their attention away for the time it would take to use his gift.
I knew that those two minutes would cost my life.
