I set the timer for forty-five seconds to heat up last night’s leftovers-chicken alfredo. Schmidt’s of course. He’s been cooking a lot more since Cece’s engagement party. It’s his way of coping, I guess.
With thirty seconds left, Jess walked into the kitchen and she playfully pushes me aside so she can look in the fridge. I lightheartedly poke her in the side-one of her many tickle spots. She squeals with surprise.
Fifteen seconds left. My hand lingered on her hips. I pull her close.
Our lips come closer.
“Nick, your food’s ready,” she deflected.
It tasted bitter.
