Trust me when I tell you that you have nothing to be scared of yet. Celebrate it and celebrate it as hard as you can. You're turning 17. I'm being as straight and forthright as I can when I tell you that the next several years are a time to savor every moment you can. Because once those years of late teenage/early adulthood (and the actual ages this covers varies from person to person) are gone, they're really and truly gone, believe me.

Realizing you're no longer a child is NOTHING compared to realizing you're no longer a teenager/young adult. I'm not that old, truthfully, but once I turned 30, a lot of things really hit me and hit me hard. And it's the first time I looked inward and really felt like adulthood had hit me with full force. It's very hard for me to describe, but the person I was when I was 17 through about 25, the way I felt day-to-day as person, the "excitement" about certain things, that feeling of "invulnerability" people talk about, that sense of naivete was gone. I've often said to Louie that it's like I can remember feeling more excited and intense about things...and now it takes more to make me feel like that. That's age for you.

Really, Sami. You seem like a girl who has a pretty good head on your shoulders. Enjoy the hell out yourself in the coming years and pay attention to yourself and your environment and hopefully you'll not only go as far as you want to, but you'll back at this time of your life with some really great and fond memories.

Sorry to be so soppy and patronizing, but there you are. Have a great birthday, sweetie!
