{Section 5 of Chapter 1}

“Adair, you’re so cunning!” Ed told me the next day, shooting me two thumbs up as we ran through the thicket. “Captain let you sleep in his tent all night. It must have been really comfortable! How’d you manage to pull that off?”

In truth I had not slept a wink last night because… Because Captain was using me as a pillow! I was horrified that I might do something obscene to him in my sleep. Like- like undressing him and running my fingers down his smooth, unblemished chest! I was so awake that ordering a few of my men to take turns keeping watch would have been imprudent.

I smiled at the goofy look on Ed’s face. Yes, there was no need for pointy ears and a tail to make him look like an overgrown pup. It seems that resting for the night relieved the repercussions of heavy drinking and the squad was back to their usual energetic selves.

It was about time we got a move on. There was no telling when the prisoner would decide to leave the village. The only reason I could surmise to his staying put was that fact that the surrounding woodlands were muddled with beasts and monsters. Knight-Captain Judgment did not hint that the prisoner would be capable of fighting on his own.

I sped up as I answered, “Ed, if you don’t want to be punished for smuggling sweats out of the city and giving them to Captain, who must keep a careful eye on his weight, then don’t mention my stay in Captain’s tent ever again.”

Last night I had accidentally discovered that Ed was Captain’s accomplice in sneaking a pie out here. Although I just couldn’t seem to figure out how and when they did it.

Captain was surprisingly quite a talker in his sleep. However, 99% of his talk had to do with food… and the other 1% had to do with money, woman, and alcohol. Next time I sit by his bedside, I’ll have to remember to bring earplugs.

“Adair!” I heard my name called again. I looked back as Ed and two others easily caught up. “Hey man, I heard you slept with Captain last night. Did you confess?”

What.

I looked back at the one who had spoken. Daichi. Of course it would be him. Daichi liked gossiping the most. Sometimes I wonder if he’d be better suited in the Storm Knight Platoon.

But more importantly, how did he remember? Everyone was dead drunk, to the point where I had to go back to the tavern in the morning to haul them up. There was no way he should have remembered. I made sure of it! I even threw in three months of my wages for extra wine!

“Oh! Is that what happened? Wow, I know you only told us recently, but I never knew you’d be so bold!” Ed smirked. It looked ridiculous on his childish doggy face.

“I did not confess,” I ground through my teeth. What if Captain heard? At that thought, I glanced back. Captain was… licking a lollipop. Where did he…?

I turned to glare at Ed. He shrunk at the look. “It wasn’t me, I swear!”

Suddenly, I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned to look at Cerise. His face was as emotionless as Knight-Captain Ice’s, eyes as big and innocent as a baby’s. “Ed only gave him the pie.”

“Then who did?”

Seriously, what is this? Did they conspire against me? Was there some kind of evil plot to sneak snacks into the forest without my knowing? When did they even plan this out?

“Um…” Daichi raised a hand, looking sheepish. My glare turned full force onto him; he didn’t shrink back though. He was used to my glares. “Haha… But I did it for you!”

“Me? How is this going to benefit me at all?” I asked, quite confused at the endeavor.

“To help you confess to Captain,” Cerise answered this time.

I blinked. “That doesn’t make sense.”

“‘Course it does!” Daichi proclaimed. “We give him candy and he becomes so distracted that he doesn’t kill you when you confess. Perfect, right?”

“No,” I deadpanned. Even with this newly acquired information, I still had a number of questions such as, when did they plan this and when did they make the trade off with Captain?

I ran the possibilities through my head, eventually setting up a time table of everything that happened since the night before we left.

We originally went to the tavern to celebrate Daichi’s birthday, I… confessed, I got the entire platoon wasted, walked back with Ed, and went to sleep. I woke up to gather the platoon and start training, ran into Judgment on my way to the kitchen to prepare Captain’s breakfast, then forsaken the task in favor of waking Captain in time to leave. That was when I ran into Cerise and told him about the mission- he was the one who packed my belongings and told the others. I had to give him credit for packing everything I needed while fighting a hangover. Let’s see… I went to Captain’s room to wake him and help him prepare before we joined up with the rest outside the Holy Temple.

Even if they had found out about the mission earlier than that, there was only a three percent chance that they came up with their plan, ran to the candy store with hangovers, waited in a huge line, avoided trouble along the way, and ran back to pack all within a thirty minute time frame. It was highly unlikely. Then how?

I snuck a peak at Ed’s bags. Could it be? Was there more in there?

“Adair look out!” someone screamed.

I only had a second to roll out of the way as a giant furry paw smashed into the ground where the four of us once stood. Luckily everyone had moved out of the way in time.

I looked at the creature that attacked. A werewolf, and a big one at that. It sat back on its hind legs and roared, scaring countless birds from their perks. I would say it was about seven feet tall.

I rose from the ground and joined the rest of the platoon as they circled the beast. I drew my sword and attracted its attention towards me as Cerise and Daichi snuck up behind it. It swiped at me with a heavy paw and I parried the attack. I nodded to the rest and everyone stepped forward, ready to subdue the monster.

Cerise and Daichi ran forward then and… secured a sack over its head.

The werewolf howled. Ed ran up and kicked it. Soon everyone was running up and kicking it until it crashed to the ground, whimpering in pain. They coldly stomped on its head, some cursing as they shoved aside their companions foot to have a better angle.

For a moment I wondered if the werewolf was repenting to the God of Light for the sneak attack. Some of the squad even felt up the poor beast in search of items to steal- at least, that’s what I hoped they were doing.

What was this? Were they holy knights or a gang of bandits? They weren’t even using their swords!

Captain walked up to me and smile, happily licking his lollipop. “Fresh meat,” he muttered.

...Of course...
