†Prologue†
~What I want is impossible to achieve by normal means, for I seek to watch the end of life.
“Pick it up.” It was a command, one that I never wanted to issue. I observed as the boy moved closer, without hesitation, and reach for the gun lying on the desk. His hands didn’t shake, his eyes remained impassive and I had to remind myself that this boy was only five years old.
The child was small compared to the Glock 19 pistol he held using both hands. It was unlike me to care for the reasons in which people sought my help but, as for this child, I had numerous questions.
Not even my dear brothers were this young when they joined. Their fathers had allowed them a normal childhood before introducing them to the organization. Although scared at first, they had eventually begun to call this place their home.
I had been born as the next head so naturally I did not have a normal childhood. My days were mostly spent learning the arts of murder, scheming, networking, and documenting official practices within the organization. That was twenty years ago.
The child reminded me of myself from back then- no. I could still smile, this boy could not. Even though his golden blond haired matched my own and his pale skin seemed to project that he had never set foot outside during the day, he was different from me.
I didn’t seek revenge. He did.
He stared at me, waiting for my next order. I wondered what his light blue eyes would look like if he ever showed some sort of emotion again; how they would glow in happiness and blur when crying. I’m sure that, not even six months ago, he was like all the other boys his age, going to school, playing with friends, laughing with his family, enjoying all the goods this world had to offer.
“My child, from now on, you must follow my every word. Is that clear?”
“Yes.”
I paused. He was quick to answer. Again, he showed no hesitation. “You can never live a normal life again. Your body belongs to me now.”
“Yes.”
His eyes held unwavering willpower. It was a pity that he had wandered into my territory. I imagine he would have become a successful adult if he had grown up under normal circumstances, living a life of luxury with a lovely wife and children.
You can never truly leave this world, hidden in the darkness, once you step inside. He could never walk in the light again or show his face to the public. Within the shadows is where you find monsters like me. Why did you have to enter the shadows, child? Why did you specifically ask for my help?
I stared into his eyes and said, “You can never deceive me. You will die only when I decide your life is no longer beneficial to me. Betrayal will automatically result in your and your acquaintances death. Do you still accept?”
I’ll give you one more chance to leave.
Say no. Child, please leave here.
Go.
Run.
His answer was simple, but even though I knew it was coming, I still wish I hadn’t heard it.
“Yes.” he responded, his crystal-like blue eyes looked into my own.
How sickening the wind is- to carry his resolution through my ears and out the window for the world to hear.
