Summary: Mac supposed she should have been impressed. It was the first time in her twenty years on earth that she had ever rendered anyone speechless.
Notes: The lyrics in this one are "La Vie Boheme/I Should Tell You" from Rent. Takes place in what would be equivilant to season four, sophomore year of college. Also, if you'll remember back to season one, Mac's birthday is in December, so that would make her 20 in this fic, yes. (If my math is screwed up, let me know.) I don't much like the ending, I can do better, but.. Meh.
I've been trying - I'm not lying
No one's perfect. I've got baggage
Life's too short, babe, time is flying
I'm looking for baggage that goes with mine
"I should tell you something," Mac said as she leaned back against the wall her bed was pushed up against.
"Hm?" Dean asked. He sat the television remote down on Mac's bed and looked at his not!girlfriend of the past several months. Veronica had introduced the two early on in college and they had immediately hit it off. It was glaringly obvious to the majority of the campus that Dean was crazy about her. He thought that the feelings were returned, but there was always something in the way of him making his move. This giant brick wall she had built up around her heart for some reason. He'd be lying if he said he wasn't hoping to be the one to break said wall down. "If you're going to say that you and Veronica are having a steamy affair behind Logan's back, I'm not sure how I'm going to take that."
Mac's jaw dropped open a little and she took a swing at him, hitting him square in the face.
"We're not!" she protested. "It does have to do with my commitment issue though... Which you may have noticed that I have." Dean raised an eyebrow.
"Really? I hadn't noticed," he said sarcastically. Taking notice of the serious look on her face he quickly collected himself. "Sorry." Mac shook her head.
"I feel like I owe you an explanation," she told him.
"You don't have to," Dean said.
"If I ever want to move on I do," she said. "You know I went to Neptune High with V and Wallace and Logan, right?"
"I do," Dean confirmed.
"Remember a few years ago when that guy took a swan dive off the Neptune Grand and it took half the sheriffs department to scrape him off a Ford in the parking lot?" Stifling a laugh, Dean nodded.
"That guy had some issues," he commented.
"That guy was my boyfriend," Mac told him, watching the slightly amused expression drain from Dean's face. "For, like, eight months. I was pretty much completely in love with him. Anyway, the night of the graduation party the senior class was having was supposed to be this huge night... Uhm, he, uh, got us a room at the Grand, where the party was. Some stuff happened and I went to take a shower and when I came out the room was completely empty. I mean, all the sheets, my clothes, the phone, all of it was gone and so was he. I was fucking embarrassed as hell." She paused for a moment, taking in several deep breaths.
"So I made this dress out of the shower curtains and the plan was to just find my car keys and run like hell, then this car alarm started going off and I thought one of my drunken classmates just passed out or something -- I just sort of broke down crying. I was humiliated, of course I did. And a few minutes later the door flies open and Veronica and Logan are running in -- I made an effort to block out most of what happened after that, but I don't think Logan and Veronica pushing me past Lamb and Sacks scraping Cassidy off of John Enbom's car is ever going to leave me.
I did the whole therapy thing, but finding out that your boyfriend is a sociopath is kind of... Something you need to deal with on your own. Logan helped me a lot that summer. I thought I was going psychotic, I mean, I'd hear Cassidy sometimes or see him, and you're not supposed to be able to see dead people. I guess it was just a way of coping..."
"Wow," Dean said quietly, watching her carefully as she spilled out the confession and fought off the tears that had begun to form in her eyes.
"Yeah, so, hi, I'm Cindy and I'm an emotional train wreck," she said. Dean blinked.
"Uh, wow," he said again.
"Oh!" Mac burst out suddenly, "And while I'm at it I should tell you that I was also switched at birth with Madison Sinclair. That name probably --- hopefully --- means nothing to you, but in high school she was one of the blondest, richest bitches. Her... Erm... My little sister was pretty cool though."
"You've had a really... Weird... Life," Dean commented. Mac nodded slightly.
"Yeah... If you never speak to me again I'll understand. I just thought you had the right to know..."
Mac supposed she should have been impressed. It was the first time in her twenty years on earth that she had ever rendered anyone speechless.
Then again, considering it was the first guy she had thought about in any way other than a friend (ala Logan and Wallace, of course) maybe she should have been less impressed, more insulted.
But there was no denying she had a pretty fucked up life...
But then again she had grown up in Neptune... Land of the fucked up life.
Oh, the drama.
