I remember the girls asking me when I first knew that I was gay. I wanted to say ‘When I first saw, Harry’, but, that wasn’t true, whether I wanted to believe it or not. Neither was it during showers, lots of naked flesh to see but I really didn’t pay all that much attention. The truth was that it was during a late night game of spin-the-bottle in fourth year. Somehow, as the bottle spun, each time it was avoiding me as it went around the circle. Seamus tapped me on the shoulder and asked who I wanted the bottle to land on when it was my turn, but I was too scared to answer. That’s when I knew, I didn’t want it to land on any of the girls, boys were far more interesting.

"Where have you been, you said you’d be here half an hour ago?" asked Ginny.

"I just stopped for a quick fag." I lied.

"Colin, you don’t smoke." Luna said, twirling her hair in her fingers.

"What is this twenty questions?"

"Yes." Padma and Parvati said, in unison.

Ginny grabbed me by my lapels and yanked me forward, her nose twitching, smelling for evidence. Unfortunately for me I had a most distinctive smell.

"You, slut!" She exclaimed.

"What! I don’t know what you’re talking about." I blushed.

"You’ve been down the park again," said Luna, her eyes twinkling.

"No, I, well, it’s the only place I can meet anyone."

"You call that ‘meeting someone’, I call it ‘a quick grope in the dark’. Colin, you don’t know who could be in those toilets, there are all sorts of nasty people out there. I think I saw Aberforth stalking a goat near the swings." Ginny said, looking around the pub to make sure no-one could hear them.

"They’re not nasty, some of them area quite charming. Last week there was this man, he said he was in waste management but I think he was an Auror, I saw his wand…"

"I bet you did." Luna said, grinning wickedly.

"Fine, if you don’t want know." I grabbed my Butterbeer and took a swig.

"Well none of us are getting any, so we may as well hear about your sordid goings on." Padma, said.

"Speak for yourself." Ginny interjected.

"Alright, other than you, we’re not getting any. So, Colin, spill the beans."

I sat there for a moment, thinking, normally I had no problem in letting them know about who or what I did. This time it was different, this time the person had been someone young. At first, I had thought it was just a local from Hogsmeade, but my mind soon changed. The writing on the piece of paper that we exchanged under the stall was very neat and precise. I was intrigued to find out who it was, so, I leant forward to try and get a glimpse. There was the sound of hurried movement and all I saw were highly polished patent leather shoes. I sat up quickly and grabbing my satchel opened the door to the stall, hoping to see the boy. I was too late, he was gone, fortunately he had left a clue. The quill we had been using was lying on the floor; it was no ordinary writing implement, the nib was silver-plated and a snake curled its way up the stem. Being distracted by this find I didn’t think to run outside to see if I could recognise anyone in the park.

"If you must know, it was a boy, I think he was from Hogwarts."

"Who was it?" asked Ginny.

"I dunno, he was gone before I saw him."

"Then you didn’t actually do anything with him?"

"No, but I know he was a student."

"You wish he was a student," Parvati said.

"Well, he did leave this behind." I said, placing the quill on the table between our Butterbeers.

At that moment Pansy Parkinson was passing the table heading toward the a table of Slytherin in the far corner.

"Where did you get this, Creevey?" she asked, swiping it off the table.

"None of your business," I replied, taking the quill form her grasp, "Do you know who it belongs to?"

There was a long silence, well as silent as Madam Rosmerta’s ever could be on a Friday evening.

"Yes, er, no. It just looks like something I’ve seen before." Pansy blushed and walked away, hurriedly.

"She knows who’s quill it is," Luna said, staring after her, "do you want me to go and ask her again?"

"No, thats okay, I’ll find out one way or the other. With a quill like that someone’s bound to ask for it back."

The following afternoon I was in the library researching Necromancy, the new Dark Arts professor had set the assignment and I had completely forgotten about it. He was a strange looking man, his eyes were completely black, so you never knew if he was looking at you or not. I had just pulled a tome off the shelf called The Resurrection of the Dead - (Inferi and Zombies are not one and the same) by someone called Ash, when I heard someone coughing behind me. I turned around to see who it was and was confronted by a dark haired boy, actually he was a young man as he was clearly older than me. He was at least six inches taller, quite thin and had medium length dark hair and even though he was wearing Slytherin colours, I had no idea who he was.

"Creevey, I believe you have something that belongs to me."

"I don’t - I’m sorry, but, I don’t even know who you are."

The stranger looked around, trying to ascertain whether they could be seen or heard.

"The names, Nott. Theodore Nott."

The young man extended his hand, which had long, pale, elegant fingers. I had heard the name before, he was probably a year above me, probably a friend of Draco Malfoy. It was strange, considering how small each class was, that I had never met him before, that I could remember.

"Colin, uh, I guess you already know." I replied, smiling as I shook his hand.

"Yes, and as I was saying, I believe you have something that belongs to me."

"I think I’d remember if I’d met you before." I replied, staring into his eyes. They seemed to say he was withdrawn, or at least sad, as it looked like he had been crying.

"Do I have to spell it out for you? My quill, Colin, Pansy said that you have it" his voice was rushed and cracking at the same time.

"You mean - you - that was you?" I stammered, looking at him with a newfound interest.

"You’re not the only one at school who bats for the other side, Colin." Theodore said.

"I guess. It’s just - I don’t know, I haven’t met anyone at school who’s - you know."

Theodore grinned, and grabbed me on the shoulder.

"Its not like the whole Seventh Year is gay, but I certainly know who is and who isn’t," he said.

"Is Harry? No, I doubt he is, all the girls love him." I said, with obvious annoyance.

My shoulders slumped, dejectedly. It wasn’t that I wanted Harry to be gay, though it would have been nice, I just wanted him to like me in the same way that I lusted after him.

"All the girls love you too, Colin. I’ve seen the gaggle who you hang out with, very cosy."

"They’re just friends, they know about me, so I guess they don’t feel threatened." I replied.

"There are more than a few boys here, with friends who are girls, who are exactly the same way." Theodore looked around again, probably not wanting to say too much in case anyone overheard.

"I must be thick, because I don’t know any."

"You know one." Theodore said.

"Who?" I looked at him confused.

"Me, silly," Theodore punched me lightly on the arm, "Anyway, I’ve got to go, its almost dinner and I can’t be late, I’m having drinks with Potter afterwards."

"What!" I exclaimed, "You and Harry?"

"No, no, it’s not like that. I had this idea, now that Draco has, um, disappeared, we should probably all think about becoming a bit closer. We could all be, well, not exactly friends per se, but less than enemies. I’d invite you, but it might be a bit strange, two Gryffindors in Slytherin House at the same time." Theodore turned to leave.

"Wait, what about your quill?" I asked, looking at the cluttered desk.

"I’ll get it another time. What about tomorrow afternoon, in the empty room beside Potion’s?"

I must have looked as if Headless Nick had just walked through me, Theodore patted me on the head.

"Don’t worry, Colin, I won’t bite," Theodore said, then grinned "unless you want me to."

My lips parted in a smile.

"Yes, I’ll be there." I swallowed hard, wondering if what he meant was what I thought it did.

Theodore walked away down the aisle of books toward the exit; at the last moment he turned and looked back at me.

"Colin."

"Yes?"

"Don’t be a stranger. If I hadn’t dropped that quill I might never have known you."

That cheesy grin, that everyone finds so adorable, would be the last thing that Theodore saw before he ducked out of the library. I couldn’t help myself, I had finally found someone at Hogwarts who was like me. Not a dream, like Harry, or some other faceless student who filled my fantasies. Theodore was a real person, maybe someone I could call friend, possibly even boyfriend.
