Ron never forgot his second year when he was forced to follow the spiders. “Why couldn’t it have been follow the butterflies?” he had asked.
Of course he didn’t have much choice at the time. Hermione was petrified, Hagrid was gone, and the school needed him. Well, the school needed Harry and Harry needed him, which was kind of like the school needing him and that was good enough for Ron.
It was several years later before he actually followed one. It was after Herbology when Ron stole a moment to himself behind the greenhouses, leaning against the sun-warmed glass. It was near the end of summer. The days were cooling down gradually. Ron, like many other students, reveled in the last days of sun before the cold winter set in again.
And then he saw her. She walked by alone, her books clutched to her chest. She’d unbuttoned her robes because of the heat and the way the wind caught the flaps made her look like she had wings. The sun shone off her golden hair, pulled into two low pigtails.
He had to follow her.
He pushed off against the glass and followed after his mystery butterfly. He tried to think of who it could be. The Gryffindors always had Herbology with the Hufflepuffs, but the Ravenclaws and Slytherins were at Care of Magical Creatures with Hagrid. It could be anyone, even someone younger than him.
She walked down to the lake and sat up against the birch tree, putting the book wantonly at her side. Ron straightened down his fiery hair and walked over to the butterfly he was finally allowed to follow. As he sat down next to her, she turned to look at him and he could finally see her face. Plump, rosy cheeks and sparkling cornflower blue eyes with a Hufflepuff crest on her robes. Hannah Abbott.
From that moment on, she was his secret butterfly. She fluttered in and out of his life whenever they had a spare moment. It was easy to get a moment alone, just Ron and Hannah. They’d volunteer to do Prefect rounds together, especially when they had to be partnered with a different house.
But it was only for a month. The death of Hannah’s mother caused Ron’s beautiful butterfly to wither away instantly. The flush in her cheeks paled into an unnatural white color. Her eyes lost the sparkle that looked like a million blue diamonds.
And then she disappeared.
Hogwarts was never the same for Ron when his butterfly turned into an angel.
