Lily was just standing in the middle of the corridor, trying to figure out where to go. She cursed herself silently - she was a seventh year and should know where to go by now. She had done a first year mistake by going up a different staircase than she should have. Now she was turned around and couldn’t tell if she was more near the tower or the library. She fretted, worrying about being late to her appointment with Professor Slughorn. He wanted to see her about something in potions and she knew she wasn’t in trouble. “Damnit!” She said quietly to herself.
James looked up at the sound of someone swearing as he entered the same corridor. He was just out exploring as he was done with Quidditch practice but didn’t want to go back to the tower just yet. Besides, it meant that he could speak with Lily for a small bit. Even if it ended in a bit of her yelling, he would be happy. He thought she was pretty even when angry. “Lily?” He asked.
Lily looked up, a bit shocked that James Potter used her first name instead of her last. “Didn’t think that you knew my first name,” she replied quietly.
“Well, I do,” James replied with a grin. “What are you doing up here?”
“I could ask you the same question,” Lily quipped and sighed. “I just - I need to get to Professor Slughorn’s office.” She left out the part about being lost because she didn’t want to give James the satisfaction of helping her when she needed it.
“Ah,” James said as he thought about the best way to go. “Come on, I’ll show you.”
“Couldn’t you just tell me?” Lily asked quietly, not really wanting to walk with James. It was due to the fact that she could move faster without James and she didn’t really want to talk with anyone. Even though James had shown himself to be less of a prat last year after the incident with Severus, she didn’t trust her instinct in boys at the moment. She didn’t want to get hurt for a second time in less than a year.
“Not really because sometimes even I get lost with it,” James replied as he turned to look at her. “Why, something wrong?”
“No - I just need to get there quickly,” Lily said quietly.
“Come on then,” James replied as he turned and walked down the corridor. Lily followed, keeping up easily with James’ pace to get to a different staircase. They go down it, reaching the bottom before it starts to change. “This way,” he says as he makes a left to another corridor that is shorter than the one upstairs before taking a right and going down a short bit of steps. Lily fell a step or two behind but catches up with him at the end of the short staircase.
“Where now?” Lily asked as they came to a stop at the bottom. There were three different ways to go and only one destination.
“Straight,” James replied. “Which I am,” he said as he went down that corridor.
“The female hearts of the Hogwarts world are singing in happiness with that revelation,” Lily quipped.
“I’m only interested in one,” James replied as he made a right hand turn, ending up at Professor Slughorn’s office. “Anything else?”
Lily blinked and grinned in surprise. “Thank you James,” she said. “I would have been very late without your help.”
James bowed and went on his way as Lily went into Slughorn’s office. He wasn’t completely innocent in helping her though. Nor did he want to tell her that he was the one behind the staircase moving where she didn’t want to go. He just wanted her to understand that he wasn’t a prat and would help her when she needed it. He just kept hoping that he would be able to date her sooner rather than later.
