X. Soft: Watching the Stars

They had lain on the ground, him leaning against the foot of the old oak tree, her leaning against him, every so often shooting a cautious glance towards the castle doors. He had laughed and said she needed a distraction.

The moment was still clear in his mind. Show me your star, she had pleaded, her voice clear like the glassy surface of the lake a few metres away. He had played innocent, asked her what she meant, but when she scowled he regretted forcing the expression that marred her beautiful face.

Okay, okay, he had given in, and pointed up. See, the Dog Star- Sirius-, and there’s Orion- my father, did you know? And that one there, that’s me. Regulus.

Wow, she had whispered and placed her hand on his, tracing patterns between the stars as if she were joining up the dots.

She traced a heart and then withdrew, pushing her head up higher onto his chest. Her soft, soft, fiery hair fanned out across, his face, tickling his nose. It smelt of vanilla.

Her favourite scent, she told him when asked. She joked about it, saying her parents should have named her Vanilla Pod, not Lily. He told her he liked her name just-as-it-was. Soft and beautiful, just like her.

After a while, a long moment frozen in time, as it always is at night, she had yawned and they had stood to leave. He had insisted, couldn’t have the lady tired now, could they? - and so he walked her all the way up to her common room.

When he turned to her to say good bye, he had found her leaning towards her. His heart had sped up, and he caught himself imagining how her soft red lips- just like her hair- would feel on his, when suddenly the portrait opened and someone had burst out to ruin the moment, forcing him to leave.

That was how he had remembered it at least, her leaning towards him. But when asked she would always deny. Of course he had initiated it, and maybe his memory was just faulty. He didn’t think so.
