Summary: Draco says his good-byes to his father.
"Father, I've failed you," Draco whispers to the still night air. "But Mother and I are happy." He looks down at the headstone announcing Lucius' death, and sighs. "I spent all that time trying to be the son you so desperately wanted me to be, and I never could live up to your expectations."
This has all been on his mind for too long, ever since his father's untimely death in Azkaban, since Draco had been unwillingly partnered with Harry Potter for work, since Harry had proved to be very different from what Draco expected.
"You can't just demand people to want what you want!" Draco continues, years of anger building. He takes a deep breath, but it doesn't calm him. "All you ever wanted was for me to be just like you! And I tried, I really wanted to please you, to be the son you wanted. But I'm not... I don't think I was ever meant to be like you."
Draco looks away from the cold piece of stone, biting his lip. There's too many unwanted emotions welling up in him, and he pushes them back quickly. Emotions make him feel vulnerable, and that's something he only allows around Harry. He's never felt so vulnerable as when he's with Harry, but he's never felt so confident either.
"It took a while, but I've built my own life. I've escaped the restrictions you put on me. Mother helped, and... and Harry helped."
Draco turns. He whispers a sincere farewell. "I won't be coming back here," he adds before leaving.
The flat Draco shares with Harry isn't as elaborate or expensive as the manor he grew up in, but it's theirs. In some ways, it feels more like home than any place he's lived before.
He finds Harry sitting on the floor, polishing his Firebolt. He glances up when Draco enters the room.
"Have you made your peace?" Harry asks.
"I think so," Draco replies truthfully, and leans over to give Harry a deep, grateful kiss.
