Summary: Alice Longbottom wanders into her parents room in the middle of the night.

Neville opened his eyes blearily and shifted under the sheets, wondering what had woken him.

“Daddy?”

He instantly became a lot more awake. He sat up slightly and looked towards the door, where a small pale shape was clinging to the doorknob. “Alice? What is it?”

“I don’t feel very well.”

He rubbed at his eyes. “Yeah? Come here then.”

The little figure padded into the room. “Is Mummy asleep?”

“Mummy’s had a long day. She took a potion to help her sleep. Do you feel sick?”

“No, but my tummy hurts. I can’t sleep. Can I sleep with you?”

He smiled. “Yeah, hop in, sweetie.”

She clambered over him and settled in between her parents. Neville grabbed his wand and poked gently at her stomach with it. She giggled. “That tickles! What are you doing?”

“Seeing why your tummy hurts.”

Her eyes widened with familiar interest. “You can tell that by looking with your wand? What’s wrong with me?”

He put his wand aside and pulled the covers up over her. “Nothing’s wrong with you. You just ate too much birthday dinner, I reckon.”

“Cal had just as much as me!”

“Oh yeah? And how many pieces of cake did you wolf down?”

She giggled again. “Three.”

“Three? You little walking dustbin.”

“I’m not a dustbin, I’m a girl.”

“Could’ve fooled me,” he grinned. “D’you feel better now?”

“Yeah, a bit.” She yawned. “Do I have to go to school tomorrow?”

“We’ll see.”

“That means yes.”

“Go to sleep, Alice.”

“Yes, Daddy.”

He stayed awake at least another hour, holding her close until her heartbeat slowed and her breath evened out.
