When Fred and George were born, they were forced to share the same cradle. The Weasleys had not known for certain that Molly was expecting twins (although they had long suspected it), and there just wasn't enough time or space to organise for the boys to sleep separately. Besides, Molly had pointed out, they slept so much better curled up together.

When Fred and George were almost two, they were moved to a new bedroom, so as to make room for baby Ronald in the nursery. This room was fitted out with two identical beds, which the boys were tucked into each night. But inevitably, when morning came, Molly would find one bed abandoned, and two small bodies in the other.

"You naughty boys! How many times do I have to tell you to stay in your own beds?"

"Why?" Fred challenged. He had recently learned this new word, and delighted in using it at every opportunity.

Molly pursed her lips. "Because you're big boys now. Big boys sleep in separate beds."

"Why?"

"Because... because that's just how things are."

"Why?" Fred replied gleefully. George giggled. "Why?" he mimicked. "Why?" This quickly escalated into a chant of "Why? Why? Why?" while both boys jumped up and down on the bed.

Molly sighed. "Go downstairs and eat your breakfast, both of you."

When Fred and George were nine, their mother caught them kissing on the lips, and told them quite firmly that they were not to do that any more.

"Why?" George asked.

"Because people might get the wrong idea," she replied evasively.

"How would they do that?" Fred piped up.

"They might think that you're.... you're in love with each other."

"But we do love each other," George replied earnestly.

"Of course you do, darling. But there's more than one way of loving someone."

"Like what?" Fred asked.

"Have you tidied your bedroom like I asked you to?" The twins shook their heads. "Well, off you go, then."

When Fred and George were twelve, a mob of upper-year Slytherins laughed and made snide remarks in their direction after noting that the twins were holding hands.

"It's because you're both boys," Lee explained to the confused twins.

"So?" asked Fred.

"Well, usually people hold hands when they're going out." He motioned to a Ravenclaw couple coming towards them down the corridor. "See? Boy. Girl." He turned to his friends. "You? Boy. Boy. That's why they're laughing."

"So it's... wrong, what we're doing?" George surmised. Lee shrugged.

When Fred and George were sixteen, they lay together in George's be, a frenzied mass of bare skin and hands and mouths and sweat and breathy whimpers. George was the first to break away.

"Stop. We shouldn't..."

Fred frowned at his brother, his breathing still erratic. "Why?"

"Because," said George, "it's wrong. We know it's wrong. We have to stop this..." He trailed off as Fred's fingers came up to caress his cheek.

"Does this feel wrong?"

"No," George whispered.

A light kiss. "And this?"

"No."

"Do you really want to stop?"

A pause.

"No."

"Well then." And when Fred's lips pressed insistently against George's, his hands roaming over damp skin, neither boy was inclined to speak again.
