The leaving feast was rapidly approaching. In two weeks Kingsley would spend his last night at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and a month after that he would begin a new chapter of his life by starting Auror Academy. Kingsley was pleased with the choices that he’d made and that he’d done so well for himself in his young life. There was only one thing that made him feel hollow and incomplete - leaving Severus.

Their lovemaking held a desperate edge, with Severus begging to be taken, to be filled. After carefully preparing his lover, Kingsley slid deep inside Severus in a slow glide of burning heat, keeping the hollowness at bay. And when they came, for just a moment the world around them slipped away.

“Headmaster Dumbledore met with me today.”

The apparently nonchalant comment startled Kingsley, and he looked down at the dark-haired man lying next to him in surprise. “Why?” he asked, wondering where this conversation was headed.

“He asked me if I believed in Lord Voldemort’s ‘school of thought and hollow promises of glory.’”

When it appeared that Severus was reluctant to voice the rest of his thoughts aloud, Kingsley questioned, “And?”

“He also said that he needed someone on the inside, someone who could keep an eye on things and report back to him. Voldemort is recruiting people as young as sixteen, mostly Slytherins, and Dumbledore thinks that I’ll be a prime candidate once I turn sixteen in January.”

Hearing Severus list many of the concerns that Kingsley had lain awake at night worrying over was deeply disturbing. But even more alarming was to hear that Dumbledore would willingly turn his young lover into a pawn in a massive and sure-to-be dangerous chess game. To clarify what he had just heard he asked in bafflement, “The Headmaster wants you to join Voldemort?”

“Apparently Dumbledore leads a group of people who are trying to stop him. My mother has been pushing me in Voldemort’s direction for quite some time, even though I don’t agree with his beliefs. This would be a good way to both please her and help those who disagreed with his heavy-handedness at the same time.” This was said in a thin, wavering voice. Severus clearly wanted Kingsley to understand, to agree, to support him.

Kingsley pulled the anxious young man closer, so that Severus’ head was pillowed on his broad shoulder. Rubbing a hand soothingly down a bare, smooth back he said quietly, “I’d hoped that you wouldn’t join Voldemort. He’s done some really terrible things, and it looks like he’s just getting worse.” Feeling nervous tremors shudder through Severus’ thin body, Kingsley reassured him, “However, I will stand beside you no matter what. We will get through whatever comes. Together.”

“I’m frightened, Kingsley.”

“So am I, love. So am I.”
