I had surgery last summer to get my gallbladder removed. The surgeon, who also does bariatric surgery, found some fatty deposits in my liver. He strongly suggested i lose weight before it becomes a problem. I was around 300 lbs and 5'6". He gave me contact information for a nutritionist in their bariatric program.

I was suspicious at first. I was afraid they'd tell me weight loss surgery was the only option. However, I never felt pressured to do the surgery. The nutritionist gave me lists of recommended foods, told me to food journal and to work out a few times a week. She also recommended i eat a 1200 calorie diet and gave me specific guidelines for carbs, fat, sugars, etc. I weigh in with her once a month. I have lost around 65 pounds since August. I honestly feel like seeing a professional has helped save my life.

I was told 6 months of this counselling are required for weight loss surgery, but i told them up front that i had very little interest in the surgery. They said that is fine, and they don't charge me anything to weigh in once a month and talk to her for 15 minutes. If you have a bariatric center near you, i would highly recommend talking with the nutritionist. She has told me that i am losing the weight just as quickly as if i have had the surgery done, and she is always very encouraging.
