At first he stays on DS9 to see if his father will return, but he keeps pursuing his dreams of journalism. His father wouldn't want him to waste his life, waiting. With the end of the Dominion War, the station becomes a hub of activity, and there's plenty to do. He travels throughout both quadrants, writing stories about what he sees and thinks.
But he always returns to DS9.
For a while he is introduced as the Emissary's son, the reporter. As his fame grows, that introduction is less common, and suddenly he is "Jake Sisko, prizewinning correspondent of Starfleet News Service."
As he gets older, the memory of Benjamin Sisko, Starfleet Captain and Emissary, transmutes into something legendary, that peculiar combination of truth and fiction that makes myth. Gradually people forget what his father was like, and some react with surprise when Jake recalls some peculiar factoid about him. The Emissary is more than human, and imperfections are forgotten amidst the swell of history. He doesn't let that upset, understanding people will believe what they need to.
Jake doesn't have to live up to his father's legend. Living up to his own is more than enough of a task.
