Meryl awoke as the commotion outside swelled. Only drunken revelry, but with Vash the Stampede in tow, that could just as easily mean danger. Through the window, two men held Vash on their shoulders, celebrating the “notorious outlaw” who had just saved their town. “The Hero of April!” they chanted.
Before their adulation could go too far, Vash slipped and fell face first into the mud. Meryl shouted down, “Some hero!”
Vash rolled over grinning and slurred, “Aiight, then. The Fool of April!” The crowd just as eagerly picked this up.
Years later, Meryl heard they still celebrated the day.
