Kort watched the taillight of Jenny's rental car vanish into the busy Parisian night, knowing that his mission had been successful. She would take that plane to Moscow, like a mouse running straight into the trap they'd laid out.
He should be satisfied, happy that it'd been so easy. But he wasn't. There was this strange feeling, forcing him to hit redial. He wanted to call her, tell her the truth about what he'd done; that everything was just one big lie.
He knew it would jeopardize everything he'd worked for, but he didn't care. Playing with someone you only knew from a file someone else had drawn up, was easy. Jenny had just been a face and a name for him, he could easily play. But ever since he'd met her in person, things that had once been simple turned out to be the hardest things he'd ever done. He now felt respect for her, for her determination to bring La Grenouille down. Hell, he even wanted to help her with that - if only he could.
Instead Kort sighed and dialed a familiar number to report that their plan had worked. But deep inside he kept wishing it hadn't.
