"Juliet, you really need to stop doing this," Jack said as Juliet placed the brown paper bag in front of him. He loved this ritual they had created over the past weeks, but it just didn't feel right to him. "This is ..."
"What?" Juliet interrupted him, sounding hurt. Jack looked up and literally saw her swallow hard, while her eyes started to fill with tears he'd caused by his clumsiness. Jack signed.
"Look. I ... it just doesn't feel right that you bring me sandwiches and coffee ..."
"But you have to eat," Juliet interrupted him, softly.
"I know. But ..." Jack sighed. Why was it so difficult to tell her how he really felt about her; that he loved to be with her; that looking forward to her sandwiches was what kept him going every single day?
"I know I need to eat ..." He took a deep breath. "Have dinner with me tonight? Please."
The silent that followed his words almost killed him and when Juliet finally looked up, a smile on her face, he'd never felt more relieved in his life.
"Like a date?" she asked and the sound of that was the best thing that had ever happened to him.

When Jack opened the door after a long shift at the hospital the smell of overcooked dinner filled his nostrils, alarming every single nerve in his tired body. A few minutes ago all he had wanted to do was fall into his bed and sleep for the next two months. But as he dropped his keys and headed for the kitchen he was wide awake, horrible visions featuring Juliet and a huge amount of blood on the floor crossing his mind.
"Juliet!" he cried out in panic, slamming the kitchen door against the wall, then stopped dead. Juliet was kneeling on the floor but instead of blood she was covered in what looked like chocolate pudding.
"I tried to make you dinner," she said apologetically.
"I can see that." Jack smiled. He was still shaky, but he was already starting to relax. He should have known better than to panic. He knew Juliet and baking was something that didn't get along very well, and the proof of that was right in front of him.
He took a towel and kneeled down beside her. "Let me help you with that," he said, kissing her forehead and smiled amused as her flushed.

They'd just finished dinner, when Juliet dropped a bombshell by announcing that he parents were in town over the weekend.
Surprised, Jack almost chocked on his whine. He had expected everything but not a visit by Juliet's parents. Yes, he knew that, sooner or later, he would have to meet them and he was also curious how they were like, but now that they were really coming Jack was more than nervous.
"Oh, that's ... a surprise," he stumbled, forcing a nervous smile. "I didn't know your father was back from Europe."
"My mom called this morning," Juliet explained. "There was a change of plans and now they are free for the weekend. You know, it's Rachel's birthday next week and they've never been here in Los Angeles ... and my dad really wants to meet you."
"Great," Jack mumbled.
Juliet, who sensed his uneasiness came over to sit down on his lap. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him. "Don't worry, Jack. They will love you."
"Are you sure?"
"Of course. My dad loves me. And I love you, right?" She smiled "See ... there's no way that he won't like you."
Jack nodded, but he wasn't really convinced.

"I don't know if I can do it" Jack confessed to Juliet's sister. They had met in a small cafe downtown, where they hoped Juliet wouldn't see them. It wasn't that they were doing something wrong or anything that would hurt Juliet, but after his strange behavior these past days Jack had senses that Juliet suspected something going on. It would be a nightmare if she found out what he was planning, but he also knew that if he didn't act soon his sneakiness would backfire, and instead of looking forward to something beautiful they might end of fighting.
"What's your problem, Jack?" Rachel asked. "Just ask her. She won't bite you."
"Are you sure?" Jack asked.
"Of course. My little sis is madly in love with you. She will be thrilled. And if she says no there's always me."
"I thought you and Richard ..."
"I'm just kidding, Jack." Rachel laughed. "Don't worry. You're really not my type."
"Not helping, Rachel," Jack muttered under his breath, but an hour later, when Juliet was in his arms crying and admiring his grandmother's ring on her finger he was relieved that he'd asked his soon-to-be sister in law for advise.

CHARACTER: Jack Shephard / Juliet Carlson
GENRE: het
RATING:
PG
WORD COUNT: 200

SUMMARY: They had never expected that furnishing a nursery would be so much work ... Written for prompt #15 "Emotion/cranky" for the 20in20 challenge at lost_land.

They had never expected that furnishing a nursery would be so much work. They had spent days driving from one furniture store to another. Jack still had no idea how to pay for all this, but he figured there would be a way; if necessary he would work double-shifts for the next years. There was no way he would be stingy with his child's first room. Keeping the baby's sex a surprise wasn't really helping to decide how the nursery should look like.
He liked blue, but Juliet argued that blue wasn't an appropriate color for a girl. Pink on the other hand wouldn't work for a boy. Green or yellow were no options for Jack and after a long argument they came home empty handed and both in a bad mood.

All night long Jack lay awake, thinking about how to apologize for his behavior, but he just couldn't find the right words. It wasn't after Juliet left the other day (still cranky) that he suddenly knew what to do and when Juliet returned home hours later, she found her husband with yellow paint on his forehead - and some of it on the walls of the new nursery.
