Haha, no, not poisonous. There are only two poisonous snakes in Wisconsin and they're both rattlers. This is a common Garter Snake (about as dangerous as your average corn snake), but it was vicious.
Ah, I see! In Germany we have two kinds of "snake": The common adder/crossed viper and the ^blind worm", which isn't even a true snake. So children learn that "the colourful ones are poisonous and the dull ones aren't" and that's enough. I googled a little and the general rule of colour=poison applies here too. Just that in this case it's amphibians that suffer the results :-)
I think it's those colours that make the picture so pretty, at any rate :-)
Yeah, usually that is true, the "brighter the color the more poisonous the venom" type thing, but it's kinda opposite in Wisconsin, here... Rattlers tend to be much more dull in color. So the smaller, non-poisonous snakes are actually quite brilliant in color.
I think the colors in the photo definitely make it as good as it was. I didn't know the tongue was that cool until I got this photo.
