Summary: Following a lead Spencer remembered, the BAU heads over to the scene of the crime to question the only witness to the kidnapping, Elizabeth Conners, the victim's 3-year-old sister. What happens next is something no one expects.

One they knew about the victim and her family was they were rich. While they certainly didn't advertise it, the manner in which they lived told their secret. Spencer watched from the unmarked car as Jessica's mother walked her youngest daughter out to their black SUV. The woman seemed to be in a hurry.

The agent looked at his colleagues. "Think she knows something?"

"Most definitely," Gordon said. "Either that,or she knows her youngster there does....." As the woman closed the door to the back, Gideon nodded. "Let's go."

Spencer very rarely got to be involved in ambush contact. So this was a little bit of an adrenaline rush for him. He followed behind the others at a bit of a slower pace. His job was clear. He was just to talk to the three year old.

“Mrs. Conners. Where's the fire?” Hotch asked casually, showing his badge. “We need to have a little talk with your daughter there. She gave one of our agents an important piece of evidence that might allow us to find Jessica.”

“Then why aren't you out there trying to find her? Lizzie can't have understood what she was doing. She's three.”

Spencer stepped forward. “Even three-year-old have a sense of stranger danger, Mrs. Connors. I promise this won't take long.” He glanced towards the rear window. Lizzie, as he now knew her to be called, was watching him. He couldn't quite understand the expression on her face. It seemed to be a mixture of fear and confusion. “You're welcome to be present, if you wish.” The agent added, as he turned his attention back to the mother.

The woman massaged the bridge of her nose. “Alright, fine.” She sighed, opening the door to let her daughter out of her car seat. “Lizzie, these nice men want to talk to you.. about Jessie.”

“Oh..” The three-year-old eyed Spencer, and only Spencer. “Did you finded her?”

“We're close.” Spencer offered, also affording her a smile. He took her hand as the last buckle freed her from the carseat.

“Wanna play in my tree house?” The little girl looked up at Spencer hopefully. The young agent looked over at Hotch, who nodded. They'd do what the could to get information from the child. Lizzie pulled Spencer towards the backyard urgently. Then the little girl tugged on his sleeve, glancing over her shoulder towards her mother's van. “Mommy doesn't like you and your friends.”
Spencer nodded slightly. He'd gotten that impression too. The question he had was why. Generally, when you were innocent of something, you didn't try and avoid the Feds. “Do you know why?” He ventured as they approached a very extravagant treehouse.

“I sure hope that question is relevant to the case.” Mrs. Conners' voice spoke up behind them. She sat down in a chaise lounge near the tree house. “I thought we were discussing Jessica, not me.”

Spencer bristled. He did not like this woman, and he did not like that Lizzie had to stay with her. Something felt off about her. “I assure you, it's relevant.” He said.

“Go 'way, Mama. This privacy!” Lizzie said. She'd climbed to the first floor of the tree house. She had her little hands on her hips. “You not 'possed to be here.” The child added.

“Why can't Mama be here?” Spencer asked? He'd climbed up to join her. As it was, he had to squat to avoid hitting his head on the ceiling of the structure. He watched her pour invisible tea into two cups. “Is that for me?” He added to his inquiry.

“Yes!” She handed him a cup. “Mama's not 'llowed up here. Jessie sayed.”

Spencer 'sipped' the tea. “Mm. This is good. Jessica didn't like Mama up here?” He was trying to keep track of their primary conversation. Thankfully,Spencer was very good with children, and he could figure things out quickly. “Why?”

“Cause, Daddy maked it...fore he died.” When she said that, Spencer saw a change come over her. Her eyes searched for somewhere to look other than him. “Owen taked Jessica for shoes... but she didn't want to go.”

Spencer became alert again, filing the name away to give to Hotch or Penny. “What's Owen's last name?”

“That's enough. Elizabeth, get down here. Now.” Mrs. Conners said suddenly. The woman was up, and crossing to the tree house. “You've asked your questions. Now we have to go.” She added, glaring at Spencer. If looks could kill, Spencer thought.

To his surprise, Lizzie stood up, and moved her small body behind him, gripping his shirt. “Her not 'llowed!” She shrilled.

“Okay, okay...” Spencer said. He was never more happy when he saw Gideon and the others come to the backyard. He turned, picking the child up gently. “Lizzie, I want you to give me an honest answer. “Does your Mama have anything to do with your sister being gone?”

“You have no right to ask her things like that!” The woman scowled, turning to Hotch. “I want him off this case! Now!”

“”Oh, I don't know. I think he's doing exactly what you hired us to do, Ma'm.” Hotch said. “Reid, everything okay?”

“Yeah.” Spencer said. “Hey, Lizzie. You want to come with me for a few minutes? I think my friends need a word with your Mama.” Despite what he knew was coming next for the little girl, he didn't want to scare her.

“ 'kay...” Spencer watched her climb down the back staircase. JJ was at the bottom, and she was smiling a bit at him, though it was thin. They never liked getting children involved in crimes, and equally torturous for them was having to take children away from their parents.

Spencer took Lizzie into his arms once they were at the bottom. He saw Hotch arresting her mother, and tried to keep her from seeing it herself. “Don't look, Lizzie.” The young man said. But it was too late.

“No! Let Mama go!” The child squirmed, trying to get down from Spencer's arms.

“It's alright, Lizzie.” He said softly. “You're going to take a ride with me and my friend Jennifer, okay?” He carried her over to the van the car they'd come in. The drive way was flooded with squad cars now. Morgan turned up from somewhere with the child's own car seat. He muttered softly, as JJ took her from him. “I hate this part...”

Morgan squeezed his shoulder. “It's for the best right now. We'll get more from her this way, anyway...” He left Spencer to help JJ settle the child down.
