“What’s a lover?”
Chloe looked up at Angela the little girl standing in front of her smiling with a wide eyed, innocent expression.
“That’s something you should let your father explain,” she answered.
“Go ahead,” Chase laughed. “You know Aunt Chloe’s better with fancy words than I am.”
Chloe blushed. “Uh, well, a lover is somebody that you…that you love.”
“Anybody you love?”
“No. No, not anybody.” Chloe chewed on her lip. “It’s somebody really special. Where did you hear it, anyway?”
“Daddy said it.”
“To Kimmy?”
She shook her head. “Daddy said that Jack is your lover. Only he said it funny, lovah. Grandpa Jack, right?”
Chloe could actually feel her blush deepen.
“Yep,” Chase replied with a grin. “That’s your grandpa Jack.”
“So what’s a lover?” the little girl demanded, looking impatiently between the two adults.
“Come here baby girl,” Chase beckoned, smiling at her as she scrambled into his arms. “Sometimes grown ups fall in love and then they call each other lovers.”
“Grandpa Jack loves Aunt Chloe?”
“He does. Very much, now that he’s decided to stop being an idiot.”
“And you love Grandpa Jack?”
Chloe nodded.
“Do I get to have a lover?” she asked, turning back to her father.
Chase blanched. “Um. Maybe. One. When you’re forty-five. And if he doesn’t treat you right, I’ll kick his ass.”
