“Sit down,” Jack urged. “Please.”
Chloe didn’t pause, didn’t falter in her frantic movements around the room.
“Chloe,” he said more firmly.
“I don’t want to sit,” she said without turning to look at him.
“You heard what the doctor said.”
She bent down, moving things from shelf to shelf, freezing, wincing, staring at him, stilling for a moment, her eyes on him. “I heard it all,” she said softly.
“You should rest.”
“No.”
“Why not?”
She shook her head, refusing to answer.
“Chloe.”
“Don’t make me stop,” she said, pleading.
He closed his eyes. “Come to bed.”
“No.”
“Then I’ll stay here,” he sighed.
“If you’re tired you should go to bed.”
“I love you,” he murmured.
She swallowed, moving further away from him.
“Did you hear me?” he asked. “I love you. Chloe, I love you. None of this matters. It doesn’t change anything. I still love you. This isn’t your fault.”
She spun around. “None of this matters?” she snapped. “How can you say that?”
“I’m sorry,” he said softly. “I didn’t mean it like that.”
“This is all that matters.”
“That’s not true.”
She moved back to the shelf, moving things around just to keep moving.
“You can’t stop, can you?” he asked, watching her.
She didn’t answer.
“You have to stop eventually, Chloe. You can’t go forever.”
“Watch me.”
“No.”
She turned at the tone in his voice.
“It was my baby too, Chloe. I’m grieving, too.”
“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I’m so sorry, Jack.”
He moved off the couch quickly, pulling her against his chest and holding her tightly. “It’s not your fault.”
“I’m sorry,” she sobbed.
“I know.” He kissed her forehead. “I know Chloe.”
