Study, Research and Distraction

All was quiet within the library of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, save for the rustle of pages of ancient tombs being turned. The library was filled with students from years one through seven, all either studying for the next exam or researching for the next paper due. Research and study are the library's purpose after all, but there were some occasions when one falls victim to distractions and plans of studying eventually fall to the wayside.
Severus sat with his nose buried deep within one of the various potions volumes the library housed. To an outside observer one would assume he was absorbed in the text, but there was no way he could continue concentrating on his studies once the person now seated across from him sat down with a stack of books and a friendly smile before delving into the world of Ancient Runes.
Why did he choose to sit here?
Midnight fringe concealed Severus' equally dark eyes as they peered over the potions book to watch one long and elegant finger trace back and forth along the lines of a voluminous book, the finger's owner oblivious to Severus' attentive and tracking eyes. No one paid him any attention anyway, not even the members of his own house. Why would anyone start now?
The finger he'd become enraptured with paused at an obviously crucial point made by the book's author, and Severus took the moment to record every detail on that one digit. To his unsuspecting delight, the hand that finger was attached to splayed out over the book causing him to take a sharp breath and wonder how a sixth year teen-aged boy could seem so elegant, especially when said boy's friends were nothing of the sort.
The hand splayed across the book about Ancient Runes moved again and Severus' eyes widened when he realized the course they were taking. No matter what actions he should have taken for self-preservation, Severus didn't move or avert his eyes. He continued staring in awe, fascination and disbelief. It wasn't until he felt the lengthy and elegant fingers gently brush the hair out of his eyes that Severus closes them.
Still he doesn't move.
"I didn't realize you found Ancient Runes so fascinating that you would ignore your own Potions' studies," Remus said in a playful and almost knowing tone.
Severus bristles, realizing he's been caught and quickly jerks back, eyes opening wide.
"Do not presume to know what I find fascinating."
Remus smirks, pulling his hand back to the other side of the table and clasping it with its mate.
Severus swallowed hard as his eyes settled on Remus' joined hands. He can still feel the soft touch of Remus' fingers against his forehead and he wants to feel that touch again, and over more places than he has the hope of ever knowing.
"No, I suppose I don't," Remus states before standing up and gathering his books. "I actually don't know you at all."
Severus starts to breathe a little easier, knowing Remus is taking leave of the library and his company. He can finally continue with his homework and hopefully finish before dinner. He can go back to being the sullen greasy git he'd been labeled as and ignored for being and chock his distraction up to stupid teen-aged hormones run amok.
"Although," Remus continues, slinging his tattered school bag over his shoulder. "I would like to."
He can't breathe. It feels like all the air has been sucked out of the library, maybe even the entire school. All Severus can do is watch Remus turn and leave, because what Remus has just stated can't possibly be true.
Why would Remus want to know him?
Why would Remus care to know him?
Why, but then all Severus truly needed to remember was that he would like nothing better than to know Remus too, to get to know the boy he'd become infatuated with over the years and maybe, in the end, Severus really does understand why.
