This is a part of the series developing here. I seem to be jumping all over chronologically. The right order to read them at this point is: Trust, Staying Alive, Enigma, Stay, Kissing, A Taste of Daniel, The Truth of it, Sated Silence and Lunch

This takes place several weeks after Lunch The ratings move between PG-13 and NC-17, for sex and violence.

My fifteenth ficlet for my 100_situations Table

The sun was setting. Make that suns, with the “s” to indicate that there were two. Somehow that just didn’t get old. The planet was pretty, with something for each of his team to appreciate, from crotchety old ruins with artifacts and writing, to ancient technology and an indigenous population that didn’t seem to harbor them any ill will or actively resent their presence.

It was a nice change of pace.

The weather was mild. Their camp was set and he could smell the coffee he had started on the fire. He might almost believe he was at some campsite on earth if not for the tiny second sun hanging just over the distant mountains.

Jack leaned against a tree, watching the sky mutate from one rich color to the next, red and purple and blue all slowly falling to the black of night. He felt a presence beside him, but didn’t turn, just smiled.

Daniel sighed, leaning slightly against him, before glancing over his shoulder, his blue eyes picking out the forms of Sam and Teal’c in the dusk before turning back to the view. “Beautiful, isn’t it,” he murmured.

Jack turned just enough to see Daniel’s face, the fading glow of the departing suns turning it a ruddy tan that made his eyes sparkle. Jack also glanced over Daniel’s shoulder at Sam and Teal’c before turning his eyes back to the sunset. “Yes, beautiful,” he responded, his hand snaking out from under his other arm to hook a finger around one of Daniel’s.

Both of them breathed in deeply before letting go and moving apart. Not here. Never off world. That was the rule. As if they had rules for this sort of thing.

“Whatcha doing?” Sam asked as she approached, stepping in between the two men.

“Watching the suns set.” Jack responded, his voice soft, his eyes slipping from the view to Daniel’s and back again.

“It’s beautiful,” she said, her hand on Jack’s shoulder.

The larger of the two suns was all but gone, only a red-orange sliver resting on the peaks. All around it the sky was a blaze with orange and indigo and pink. The smaller sun hung above, over a space of darker purple and resting on a field of black, its glow seemingly self contained.

Teal’c appeared at Daniel’s side and in silence the four of them watched the smaller sun sink slowly into the dark mass of the mountains. When it was fully gone, Teal’c turned with a slight bow. “Dinner is ready,” he said softly.

Jack nodded and Teal’c and Sam withdrew toward the fire. Daniel stepped closer, licking his lips as his eyes traveled up over Jack’s shoulder. He didn’t speak, only breathed softly before resting his forehead against Jack’s shoulder. Then he was gone…off to accept his cup of reconstituted stew from Sam and settle to a seat on the cold ground across the fire.

Their conversation drifted his way, more as soft, comfortable sounds than any real words. Perfectly at ease, as though they had been born to be here, exactly this way. Jack turned, eyeing them in much the way he had the sunset. Daniel turned his way, his eyes almost invisible in the dark behind his glasses. His smile was familiar, intimate, hidden behind his raised cup that he held out in offering, inviting Jack to join them.

He had felt so separated from them in the past weeks, except when he was alone with Daniel. He envied the ease with which the younger man accepted what had changed between them, and seamlessly integrated it with what had not. Jack was less certain, less comfortable. This was their first mission out after…and Jack found himself far more introspective than he was comfortable with.

With a sigh, he pushed off the tree and rejoined his team, taking the offered cup and sinking to a seat on the ground between Daniel and Sam, joining their banter with an ease that surprised even him. His smile was genuine, even as Sam rose and said her good nights, withdrawing to her tent. “I’ll take first watch, T.” Jack said as Teal’c rose and reached for his weapon.

“Then I too shall say good night.”

Jack watched him go, then turned to Daniel. “You should probably get some rest too, Dr. Jackson.”

Daniel nodded, his hand slipping over to rest on Jack’s thigh. “Are you…okay?” His eyes met Jack’s, conveying far more than the casual concern in his voice. “You seem…quiet.”

Jack smiled and let one hand caress Daniel’s cheek. “I’m fine. Just appreciating what I have.”

Daniel nodded again and stood, stretching. “Want me to stay up with you?”

Jack shook his head and stood as well. “No, get some rest.”

For a long moment they stood, looking like they wanted something more, then Daniel smiled and nodded, walking away with his hands in his pockets, leaving Jack to tend the fire and watch over the camp.

Jack banked the coals of the fire, covering them with ash, watching as the red disappeared beneath the black just as the suns had. He had no words for what it was he was feeling, but then, words were more Daniel’s department. He breathed deeply of the fresh air and set out to walk the perimeter, content to follow Daniel’s lead, and just accept things as they were…at least for now.
