We're in Tucson now. Got our internet hooked up last night. Everything is cool.
We rented a little studio apartment. We were interested in keeping monthly costs as low as possible. This place also has some kind of air conditioning unit that is separate from the electric, so we don't have to pay for that extra. Since AC is so expensive in the summer, it's a pretty sweet deal. The only problem is that we have too much crap. It's like 80% Mike's stuff, but I do have a lot of junk of my own. I can't find a place to set up my printer, and I think it may have gotten broken in the trailer anyway. So I may be making the switch to ordering out for con goods sooner than I thought.
The cats were pretty cool on the trip, I was surprised. Cookie felt safer in her carrier, so she didn't try to get out. She only got hissy while we were at my mom's house and there were like 5 other cats there. She wailed a little in the car, but I just had to put my hand on her carrier and she was okay again.
Doodles was a pain in the ass, though. She wasn't scared, but she kept trying to escape, and she was whiny the whole way there to be let out. I did give in and let her out while on the interstate, even though I know it's not a great idea. If you get in an accident with an animal in the car, they will probably fly out the windshield. -_-;; But she's so small now (she's about 3 months old), that I didn't have any problems with her distracting me or anything. She just sat in my lap and looked out the window for most of the trip. I found that this was way less distracting than listening to her screaming to be let out for 22 hours.
After we got to Tucson, we chilled at Mike's family's house for a while. His parents are not typical upper class people, they're very frugal. But they made some good investments at some point, so they have this super amazing house. It's got a view of the Catalina mountains and a hot tub in the back. I like staying there. It's like being at a swanky hotel with free food. And they have an awesomely cute giant dog. But I am prideful about not mooching on people if I can help it. So we limited it to a week.
After that, we went to A-kon in Dallas. It was nuts. I didn't leave my chair except for a few bathroom breaks all weekend. I lost count of how many commissions I did. It was around 20. I made enough money to wait on the job hunt until I get settled in. I finally opened a business account at the bank so that I can start doing things legit.
I had an idea for a money drive on Lavender Legend. One of my favorite webcomic people, Rae from Overlord of Ravenfell, suggested Mpix metallic prints. I checked out the prices, and they're too high for me to do normal convention goods. But I was thinking of doing a limited edition run of an exclusive image. They'll be signed and numbered like real art pieces, and only 20 copies will ever exist. I think that by stressing the rarity, I can give these out as rewards for $50+ donations. And of course, I'll have something for lower increments as well.
This apartment is tiny, but I'm working on making it as nice as possible. I knew the old place wouldn't last more than a year, so I never really decorated it. I think I have the bathroom pretty well done right now. That's something.
Okay, so that's an update on what I'm doing. I'll try and get back to normal updates on my sites pretty soon.
